Amendments to published book, cover not meeting requirements

Hi everyone

This is the first time I’ve written on the forums, I hope someone can help!

Two weeks ago I released my debut novel as a paperback and E-book. As I’ve never self published a book before (and I read some reviews about the formatting not being correct) I decided to order a paperback copy for myself and a kindle. I then unpublished both and read my book. I’ve noticed some changes were needed (typos, sentence rearranged etc) and uploaded and published again. The kindle has gone up fine, but I keep having my paperback rejected and the emails I receive from Amazon are ‘barcode overlaps text.’ When I do the online review, the barcode does not cover any text, I’ve had my designer move the barcode box up and have even resorted to getting her to put the cover again on a new template but it’s still not working!

I’m reluctant to unpublish my ebook as that’s fine but I don’t really want my Ebook availabile if my paperback isn’t, and I don’t want to start my advertising without both being available.

I have contacted Amazon and am waiting a response but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this and if I can do something about it whilst waiting for a response?

Thanks in advance!

Faye

Try it without any barcode box. I recall someone else getting an error because they tried to get fancy with a rectangle filled with white, thinking they had to mask out the background. When they just let it be background, it went through.

You should not put a barcode box in at all. KDP-Print will do so. Anything you insert gets in the way. You need a more knowledgeable designer or, better yet, learn to do it yourself.

It always amazes me that people will throw money at incompetent book designers, yet not spend the five minutes necessary to watch a YouTube video that explains it all.

I decided to order a paperback copy for myself and a kindle

You did the right thing. I am amazed at how many newbies start publishing ebooks without ever actually having read an ebook, never mind studied it and figure out how it was done. Even after ten years, I still try to buy the first copy of each book I publish, so that I can ensure that it came out right. The downloaded Kindle Previewer is good, but there are changes made after you hit the Publish button, and the only way to know what the buyer is getting is to be a buyer yourself. (Plus you get your royalty and a bump in sales ranking. That first purchase used to put me at 125,000 or so, though probably it's now less dramatic.)

KDP Print is very slowly improving, but IMHO you're still much better off with CreateSpace or (if you're in it for the long haul) IngramSpark.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Good luck! -- NJ
