Good reviews that are bad?

I've just had a three-star review that said my book was well written, good character development, etc. and that it was "OK". But then they put the caveat on the end (they "bought" it on a free promotion) that readers shouldn't pay for it.

This seems to suggest a feeling that readers think all books should be free unless they personally see them as a 4/5-star product.

Worrying trend and attitude?

p.s. most of my reviews are 5 star.

There's always one isn't there? These people don't stop for a second to think about the hours someone has put into crafting a book and they think they deserve to get everything for free. I'd like to see what they said if their boss said their performace wasn't outstanding so they weren't going to get paid for their work. Ignore them.

Actually, I hate to tell you this...
It's a shocking trend in the way people are thinking. It's really hard to ignore. I'm not sure the exact reason why it is, but I can tell you from my teaching experience that today's teens are expecting to get 100's on everything they do, no matter how poorly they did on a project. Then when they don't receive 100 points, they ask why and act shocked that they didn't hit objectives of the project.
It could be because this generation of teenagers are the "entitled generation." Their parents have worked so hard on advocating for them, making them self-advocating, that it really doesn't matter if they hit the mark or not. They want what they think they deserve, even if they don't deserve it. It's sad.

I'm seeing this attitude too, and that is why I have chosen to leave KDP Select. It takes me a year to develop a novel and see it through the many stages to get it publication ready, and then I don't make that much per purchase, so I am not going to give it away.

I started that novel in 1996/7, so you can understand why I might want to make some money from it. Though I intend to get more novels out a lot faster ;)

Grade inflation is horrible. Very few from my school scored high enough to go on to do 'A' levels - now it seems nearly everyone does!

That does kind of apply to people who think their book is always entitled to a five-star review, too. (Including some very famous professional authors I could name but whom I think we all know, at least from their getting into fights on the Amazon reviews of their book...)

I've just had one reader praise a book of mine, saying it was his best read since The Da Vinci Code. Trouble is, I thought Dan Brown's book really sucked.

Yes it sure seems that way. I didn't need grammar for 60 years, now I do and have downloaded some lessons. My last book tells why I didn't get any grammer in school.

As far as the free and KDP borrow, I beleive it don't help the new or if your books are priced cheap. They will buy if it is free, but borrow the high priced ones. And they don't give back any reviews, good or bad.

I agree with Megan. I didn't get into KDP Select because I work hard to write my books and I'm not going to give them away. I know a lot of folks see it as a good marketing strategy, but I've done very well without it.

It sucks to get a bad review, but it sucks even more to get a bad review from somebody who got the book for free.

My book was mentioned in the daily free books promotion. This person wrote the name of my book and this comment " I shudder to think what's in this book! " She hadn't even opened it, to me that has wrecked my free promotion day and instantly given me a negative review without reviewing my book properly. Frustrating!

After I found her comment I decided to stop the free promotion of my book , let them pay for it. It will be interesting to see if she will ever review my book because when she does open it, she actually might get a pleasant surprise. And even then she will still give a negative review so she can substantiate her original comment.
