@Kate: I have diagnosed your problem. You, sadly, are the money-machine! That's what everyone sees when they fall in love with an arts and lit major...dollar signs, lol!! ; ) You must become famous, there are no two ways about it.
I'm waiting for my husband to get on a contract in a kickass location (not Afghanistan, thank you very much) and then oops, I'll have to quit my job to join him. Even then, I'll probably still try to get work on the contract, but a girl can dream.
I got lucky I married him while he was still studying and then he landed a really good job and is well paid so i get the love side of things and the money side of things. I think it was all those nights I spent reading and rereading Pride and Prejudice. If Miss Bennet can do it so can the rest of us.
I have published a compilation of my monthly blog posts which have a pretty good following, but the book has not done as well as I thought. It is extremely topical at the moment. What length of time do the more experienced authors here recommend keeping a work on KDP Select?
That's really a hard one to call. I think the real key is the number of borrows one receives each month. Using the free promotion is only good for a multibook author that wants to bring other works to a readers attention. But...if you make the book free several times, the number of downloads drops dramatically.
If one's borrows drops to less than thirty, I've got to believe the other distributors can match that. The help in rankings is also lowered by fewer borrows. In my particular situation, KDP works great but not everyone is in my situation.
I do think that if you leave, a good time to return would be about six months when a new round of kendle users are available to make the free offer worth it. However, this is pure conjuecture on my part and I'm not sure about that time frame. I've used no free offers this round and probably won't. I'm still getting enough borrows to justify staying in the program.
I may catch some flak about this, but I don't believe you disparage Amazon by putting your book at other distributors. If Select is not giving you borrows, try something else. If that doesn't work, come back and try again. We all must work to find a market place that works for us. Keep in mind that even at 30 borrows a month, that's sixty dollars. You would have to sell 171 books at the .99 price at those other distributors to make the same amount. Is that possible? Each author must decide.
This is an interesting scenario. I would love to see that in my rankings someday. I haven't sold much on my first title America vs. America. I've switched my concepts in America by shifting to the topic of debt riddance. This caused me to come up with the site called http://www.america-vs-america.com. It covers topics of money making and debt management that could help people get over debt in their lives.
DROPS to less than 30? I guess it's a good thing I got out! Even in December I didn't pull off 30 borrows per book. : )
I should have known my borrows weren't cutting it--My friend Matt got 400 borrows on his one book last month alone.
But then, I happily dropped my other distributors because they were not selling 30 a month either. And I've been back in BN for about two weeks now without a single sale. A smattering of borrows has to be better than 0 sales...
And of course, I still maintain that the exposure from the free promotion will increase sales for you even if you only have one book.
So...I just got done talking about how the 22-27 sales slow down for me and what happened yesterday? Red letter day, lol! Most sales all month. I am more than happy to be proven wrong like that. ; )
Actually, there is an asterick on the 30 borrows each month. *** I didn't metntion that it was 30 borrows for all books published. In my case, I have nine on Amazon and they are borrowed between 150 to 200 a month. I know that being on B&N for last April to November I usually only sold 15 to 20 a month. Gemany sells about sixty books a month (how and why...I have no idea) So if my total borrows were around 30 for all books, it might be worth looking at other distributors.
I have also noticed that sales have picked up considerably over the last six days. Of ourse I did publish a new book seven days ago.
My major concern about the other distributors changing my price and having to fight to get the Amazon price back to normal is the main reason I choose to stick with the 800 lb. Gorilla.
One thought on driving B&N sales. Try writing something small, maybe a poem or a flash-fiction story and publish it for free through Smashwords. Once the freebie is posted on Barnes & Noble, it will push your sales up. Not that mine are that great, but my B&N sales are about 1/2 my Amazon ones, which I think is a pretty good ratio. The only thing that can account for it is the free short stories.
(One note, in quantity, B&N is probably closer to 1/3, due to more sales of the full-length novels...and comparison includes all of the Amazon countries )
