hmm...we may be back to the drawing board, flipping distributor is now messing me around with the rights to it, I'd have to sell over 100 books at $4.99 to even break even at the price they're currently saying they want, and that licence is only good for 1 year! I laughed, long and loud. they are reconsidering...I've already text my mate and his boyfriend and pointed out that they just got them an extra £5k on their house sale because I shilled it up and they Owe Me. and their ties are better too
I have every intention. they're not quite as rugged as I'd like for my characters but they're very photogenic and I do a bit of photography as a hobby, their house is full of arty pics I've taken of them in the past, so it's worth a try and see if I can get what I want if these stupid people continue to be arsey about this image
Before you go with the image here, make your second cover and post it up...maybe it will turn out better and you won't have to pay for the rights. (Also, you don't have to worry later that they'll challenge your rights to the image after you've paid for it.)
Well I'm deep in discussion with two lots of people now - the agency reselling the pic and the company that actually owns it. Moral of the story is never trust the office monkey when they say that ebook covers don't count under the "extended distribution" licence. Am now liasing with the organ-grinder and trying to play one off against the other. We shall see... Fuming because I love that image!! I don't mind paying for it, but it'll damn well be on my terms and I'm not settling for anything less than 10,000 copies and 5 years.
I've got the picture - and for considerably less than the first company intitially wanted! woop! I fell a little bit in love with the smile of the guy on the left. plus my friends were very uncooperative about posing when they knew it was for a book cover. when it's a tryptic for over their bed, then suddenly they've got no inhibitions...typical!
thanks, I'm playing around with different ideas now!
Guerilla marketing 101 - I've gone with the company who own the pic, who specialise in GLBT stock photos. I've just had an email from their office insisting I send them a link to the book when it's available because they're all intrigued by it. Authorial stroppiness clearly gets attention. I may make my money back yet
Diamond, I like how with istockphoto I can order a standard license that is good for 499,999 impressions of a photo. That means I would need to sell about half a million copies of one title. Sounds good to me Then after that, they offer extended licensing. Check them out.
I usually do, unfortunately you try finding a pic of gay men in suits that's not a wedding snap. Let me know when you do!! Plus the guys in that pic actually look like my characters, which is a coincidence but a bonus. I just keep telling myself that I'll make the money back from ARe in 2 weeks and it'll be a good tax write off
