Does a jump in rankings always indicate sales. I am a bit confused as I don't see corresponding sales on my dashboard. One case is actually with respect to an AMS ad I ran. It indicated two sales but only one reflected. Was testing another promo a few days ago and saw a rankings jump but no corresponding sales. Sent KDP an email and they essentially replied by saying the reports have all been reconciled. Now, I'm just confused. I want to go ahead with my promo but fear getting ghost sales. Anyone else had this problem?

Your ranking is relative to all other books, so activity elsewhere can affect it.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook. Each does one thing well and the other thing poorly.)

Per a Customer Service reply I received a few days ago:
If a person clicks on a book advertised but buys another that you have published, per following what they click on from the original, it counts on the AMS total sales.

As far as rankings, they are flooky. One day this past week I had no nothing and jumped up massively in rank.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just wait to see what KDP says.

Rankings go higher or lower when people above you are or below you in rank sell more or sell less than you do. If you sell nothing and books similar in rank to yours stop selling as many as they were selling, your rank will improve. If you sell a lot of books but the people with similar ranks suddenly sell even more than you do, your rank will get worse. Rank compares your sales to other authors' sales, it doesn't just describe your sales.

I understand all that thrasheryll. But then assume you are selling nothing. You are ranked in the millions. You run a promo and jump the equivalent of a sale. Is that still all the other books in the store or your promo? I'm so confused. I don't know whether my promo had any impact or whether the ranking just decided to jump for some reason. KDP replied the last time that they had reconciled my reports so it looks like I may have to let this one go whatever really happened.

Just got another reply from KDP. Apparently, a lot of factors affect ranking. Anyway, I'm putting this behind me. This question can be marked as resolved. Thank you for all your replies.
