I am working on two books currently and I have the titles in mind for both. I have done a search on a few venues to make sure the titles I have chosen aren't already taken, so far I haven't found one. Just to be safe, is there a particular web site to research this?
Thanks in advance!

Not that I know of, but even if you did have the same title to an obscure work, it's okay. Did you know there are two Twilights? The first Twilight came out in the 90s, I think. My book BeSwitched was released in 2004, just before a traditional publisher released a book called Beswitched. What is so funny is that when I rereleased it in September, it was just before Penguin (I think), re-released her title. I just figured that if people are searching for her book, mine would pop up, too; and that isn't such a bad thing :)

Titles can't be copyrighted so use the ones you love! : )

I totally get it, you want the perfect title and then you find out it's already out there...irritating! That being said, if it's the right title for the book then stick with it (unless it's a massive title you'll be duplicating, like Twilight). Good check is goodreads, they're a review site and if it's out there, they've almost certainly got it. Go there and run a title search. Simples.

I love coming up with the titles of my books.

Once I do, I just search amazon to check there are not too many books of the same title. It doesn't bother me if there are one or two.

Thanks Molly, Traci and Kate!
It makes me feel so much better knowing that I don't have to worry about the unfortunate happening. I don't want to duplicate a Title, and I haven't as far as my search has gone. But the thought of 'what if' bothered me. One of my books is a Time Travel romance and the title "Past Time" just entered my mind before I started writing it. I may add to it, but I think I will keep as is.
One less thing to worry about.
Thanks again! :)

Chances are the title has been used. I have one series that has been used as the title of a song and another that has been used by a law firm. When I checked to see if novels had the titles already, I did not check songs and other things that might have already used the titles. You have to really get creative to come up with something that has not already been used many times, just like all plots have been used a million times.

I go to Amazon ebooks and punch in my title. If it has been employed, I'll change a word here or there. To illustrate, I'll provide and example, although as an immediate disclaimer, this is not one of my many works.

"Gunfights in Dodge City", I tap it in and it has been used (a million times).

"Boots on the Hill Dodge City"

See what I mean?

actually the most popular titles are already in use elsewhere before they become titles -- look how many of the top 100 are plays on common expressions. song titles are very popular as book titles because they're already memorable - they're known as earworms (after the phenomena of getting a piece of music stuck in your head). the point of a title is that it's memorable and it rolls off the tongue, going with something that's already known is the best way to do that.

I think the only thing you can't do is use a trademarked name in the title. For example, you might be in trouble if you have a book called Reebok in Short.

I usually put the title I want in the internet search engine and amazon, but a few of mine have the same titles as others.

I just made mine up and didn't care if they'd already been used. Probably because I didn't think anyone would dare to use it before me! I don't know about a particular website, but I used Google to do research on a pseudonym. That's probably not going to be new to you, though. I don't know of anyone that hasn't used Google.

I check Amazon, Smashwords, Google, etc.

I think it's desirable to have an original title, such as Castle Cay, my first Julie O'Hara mystery. It's the fictional name of an island in the Caribbean which is central to the plot. So far, I haven't seen the title anywhere else, so anyone who hears of it can find it easily with no confusion...even if they don't remember my name.

The second novel in the series is Swan Song. That's hardly original, but the book is a whodunit about a woman whose body is found adrift in a swan boat. Anyone who reads the book through will easily see why it was a particularly fitting title. That said, if someone looks for Swan Song, they may stumble across several others before they find mine. Unfortunately, they might just buy one of those.
