I'm talking about their paid advertising, not their deals. I got an invite to set up an ad and did, but now I'm wondering if I should have researched this a little more before diving in (though the ad won't start till the 1st).

While I have a little bit of an understanding as to how their bidding works (it's per impression, not click), I'm not sure how much I should gamble per bid and day. If I go minimally, I feel like I might be just wasting my time, if I go all out I run the risk of scaring myself away :). I'm advertising in general non-fiction (pretty broad) and they suggest a bid of $5-$12. No idea what my best bet there would be. $6 seems safe, $12.50 seems like it'll let me know right off the bat whether or not my ad will work.

If anyone has any thoughts, links, input... I'm all ears. Thanks.

I've never tried it, because it's CPM, not CPC: you pay whether or not you get clicks. That requires deep pockets. All the reports I've seen from indie authors on blogs, etc. have said it wasn't worthwhile.

Their newsletter promotions, on the other hand, are well worth it, and you can make a decent profit.

I tried it once. It ate up my budget without providing sales. Of course others may have had a more rewarding experience. I believe their original advertising method is expensive but generally viable if your books are accepted.

Thanks.

Yeah... I'm rethinking this now. I put a lot of money up for bids, and did so with a really general target area. I think I'm going to drop my bid significantly, and narrow my target area to a couple of authors that I do well with in my Amazon marketing. I'll follow up with how this goes.

Oh boy. Just went to edit my ad and didn't realize I had set it up to start at 12AM this morning :). It's been running for a 14 hours already. That's what happens when I do these things before bedtime.

Anyhow, it's cost me $9.58 thus far. I got 1186 impressions, with a total of 7 clicks. I woke up to 4 book sales this morning, so now the gamble is on. I have no clue if those sales came from my Amazon ads, or this - and there's no way I know of to tell. With the cost of my Amazon ads and this I'm going to break about even (or take a slight hit) if I don't make any more sales. Which brings up another question, if anyone wants to offer their thoughts and opinions...

For a new author with a single book, is it better to make a consistent profit, or sell as many books as possible? The benefit of the latter is for investment sake, as in - the more people that are reading my book, the better - so long as it's going over well.

That's very expensive clicking!

I waited until I had ten books before I started experimenting with advertising and I'm glad I did that. I get extra buys simply because Amazon will suggest my other books to the buyer. The best thing by far I have tried is AMS. I am pretty niche which works in your favor with AMS.

If your book is not in KU, then AMS will clearly show when a person buys it after clicking your link. If you are in KU, then you are left in the dark since they don't include borrows with AMS details, sadly.

You did better than I did. I blew through $25 without a single click. Never again.
