Would it kill any of you to let someone offer alternative help without tearing down their ideas, particularly when they are just that, ideas? All anyone else did was ridicule his cover, but when I make an effort to make real suggestions regarding how to improve it all I get is more ridicule.

I created the helmet off the top of my head to act as a stand-in to show the OP how something like that could look in place of the 2D image his 'artist' used.

BL, I wish I knew how to put a cover on here, because I would add my own suggestion. (I would love people to tear my suggestion apart.) Kudos to you for sussing out how to do it.

If you're still not satisfied with the cover and liked my examples, look me up and send me an email. I am happy to help any way I can free of charge. We're supposed to help each other here, not just criticize.

On my screen the kindle cover looks exactly like the one you uploaded but the paperback looks like your example on the left. This is just a thought but it could be that the image showing for the paperback was converted from what was provided for the printed book. It sounds like you may be redoing the cover anyway but if not (or if you have this problem again) it might be worth using the “contact us button” and asking if you can provide the image again only for display or if they can use the kindle image for both books.

BTW: I had no problem finding both editions of your book with a search so that must have worked it’s self out over the last couple days.

The titles are linked but he still needs to settle on one pen name and complete his Author Central profile.

One more time. The individual elements are not intended to be the finished product, nor am I submitting them for critique. They are only serving as stand-ins to show how black elements can work with better lighting, shading, contrast, and composition.

Oh, I didn't look that closely at anything but the cover. I was just commenting that I had no problem finding them in the search since the OP mentioned that as a concern.

I don't know what's happened in this thread--somehow, I missed whatever it was that caused BL to delete posts, etc. Whatever--I suspect it was unfortunate, as happens all too often here. Some sort of piranha feeding, no doubt.

BL: it's an excellent example of creating contrast--badly needed contrast--where ere there was none. Thanks for the demo--seriously.

Wow, BL! That really made me stop and look. I love it. And that background is so cool.

Thanks. During the process of creating my own book covers I've made a lot of mistakes, but I've learned even more and always try to pass on what I've learned. The background is 'Unrestricted Blue Stone' by DivsM-stock on DeviantArt. There is a lot of good artwork available there either free or for a minimal charge. I desaturated the image and lit it to appear three-dimensional.

The usual misdirected, self-serving criticisms unaccompanied by constructive help. Instead of addressing the OPs problem, certain members seemed more interested in tearing apart my examples as if they were submitted for critique rather than serving as mock-ups to demonstrate potential ways the OP might improve his cover.
I guess they assumed I didn't know the helmet looks a bit like German Batman's pickelhaube (In my defense, so does the original)

Thanks for the information on the background. I've used artists from DeviantArt for my covers. I agree, there's a wealth of reasonably priced art through them.

Any of the covers suggested by B.L Alley would be better - infinitely better - than the cover you have now.

Your existing cover, which remains on both the ebook and paperback as of this post anyway, is simply godawful. It is incomprehensible, with an image that looks sort of like a 6-year-old's drawing of a space battle of some kind, if even that sense can be made of it, and with, at best, timid, weak, and hesitant typography.

You do your book a great disservice with this cover.

Seriously, don't wed yourself to what you think your cover ought to look like, but rather study the covers of, say, the bestselling 25 to 100 titles in the genre in which you think this belongs.

I wish you every success.
