SO, I finally did IT.
I finally put "The End" to my baby. It's been in my head, my heart and my computer for over a year. It started as an idea. Then a thought with a detail or two. I told a friend about it. She said, "You need to write that." So I did. And for a while, I couldn't NOT write it. Then I sent it to a few friends for their opinions. They liked it, in general. Some had suggestions. Some made good points.
I edited.
I re-edited.
Finally, my wonderful husband said, 'Enough already! Just put it out there."
So, I did. Last night I submitted my baby for both Kindle and Paperback publishing.
I told my friends. I told my family.
Now it's out there!
I've given it life. Now, I need to wait and see if it will live or die.

Hi Jennifer,

Congratulations! Seriously, it's an achievement, for sure. We all remember that feeling of excitement, and relief at finally hitting the publish button.

But I should warn you that this isn't the place to post the name of your book, not unless you're ready to have the community take it apart, piece by piece. Apart from the fact that it could be seen that you're touting for sales, we're a highly critical bunch, and the minute someone puts a book title out there, people will take it upon themselves to have a look and see what you're all about.

Unless you've got a really thick skin (we're talking rhino depth), it's really not wise.

And before anyone thinks I'm pointing a finger, I'm not. I'm one of those people who is curious enough to go and look at a named masterpiece and offer my opinion.

Nobody here sets out to be nasty, but we don't sugar coat things either, so you may want to edit your post to take the name out before it's too late.

Of course, if you're happy to take (largely) good advice, leave it there and see what you get.

Either way, congrats again, and welcome to the community.

Best wishes,

J

I've been a nurse most of my adult life. Thick skin comes with the territory!

In reality, I'm just happy with the achievement of completing this book. I read voraciously and can find things I don't like but more often than not, I enjoy a good story and when I can, I let the author know that I enjoyed the escape from reality. Writing is hard work. My son is a playwright and his imagination never ceases to amaze me. Being able to put it on paper? Even more impressive. LOL - he doesn't even know I did this yet!

I really do appreciate the advice. And I may or may not come to realize I was naive, but for now, this is just too much fun.

Then I wish you the best of luck.

And seeing as you're being brave, I'll get started by offering you your first piece of advice. (I told you - we're curious - we look!)

Your cover. You've published a fantasy novel, so you need to have a cover to reflect that, not one of the generic ones that kindle offer to everyone. You need to attract as many customers as possible.

The first 30 days after publishing is when your book has maximum visibility, so you need to do something about it quickly.

There are plenty of websites offering low price covers if you can't afford to get something made and you're not able to come up with something yourself.

I'm sure other people will come up with some suggestions of where you can get the best ones.

I did check out the Look Inside, and FWIW, I was enjoying it. Sadly, fantasy and fairy stories aren't my thing, but that being said, if you got me interested enough to read the prologue, then I think you're doing something right.

Best wishes.

J :)

I avoided posting 'concerns' since it's the holidays and I don't want to upset anyone, but I agree, the cover needs changed out desperately. Unless the goal isn't to sell it but just have it out there.
Hit up kboards.com and search for covers and you can find a slew of inexpensive fantasy premades.

I agree. I actually have a photo I want to use, but can't find it! As soon as I do, I'll change it.
Thanks

Eh, tried to change it...not sure what I'm doing wrong, but It's fine for now. I know, I know - not the best cover in the world, but, I'm hoping that more people are like me and pick books by either title, author or genre (though I must say, I'll read anything and the cover isn't usually the deciding factor - the description is).

Thanks for the input. Next time, I'll know better...and there WILL be a next time. :-)

Covers are really important, so if you can possibly change it, you should. I don't judge a book by the cover either, but you need to believe me when I say that we're in the minority. It's hard enough to sell a book with a great cover, let alone one that looks like grandma's wallpaper. (Sorry if that sounded mean, it wasn't meant to.)

If you post a message on the Formatting forum, explaining what the problem is, I'm sure someone will be able to offer advice. There are some really knowledgeable people who post there who will be able to help you, I'm sure.

You can change a cover regularly to keep things fresh. Whatever help you get from the forum will enable you to not only change this one, but create future covers. It's worth doing.

Best of luck. J
