Too dark. It needs some contrast. It was hard to tell what I was looking at even on a laptop. That means it won't come over very well as a thumbnail.

I agree - a bit too dark, especially for a thumbnail.

Also depends on what the subject is. Otherwise, I like it.

agreed, too dark. perhaps up the contrast with the sky in the background as well and use the colour from the sky for the font, otherwise the red and orange will clash. good luck with it!!

It's dramatic, but difficult to see the background.

Too dark. Background needs more definition.

ladyhawk, load us up a revised cover when you make your (if any) revisions. I love looking at cover art.

I would concur with their assessment that it's much too dark, but I'd also like to add that you could probably put a few effects on the title text, such as bevel & emboss, maybe a gradient overlay of black to red, and an outer glow?

No no no no! Didn't you read my article about designing covers. That sort of stuff is terrible! It doesn't make it look cooler it actually detracts from the design.

Personally with this cover I would chose a different original image ... that to me is what's letting it down ... it's too dark and get rid of the nasty nasty cheap font. Far too literal.

Any way you can read the full article here:

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you on this one, although I don't think that font does much for it to begin with. There certainly is nothing wrong with putting an effect or two on text, provided you do the text justice.

Ah, there's nothing wrong with respectfully disagreeing at all. Fair play, but as you say - it's not right to start off with.

I'm quite into my cooking. I see flavours as design elements. Sometime people add too many herbs and spices to makes something more exciting but if you're not working with good ingredients to start off with then it's just a way to over egg the pudding. Start with the basics being good and you can't go wrong. Simple ingredients in the right balance is perfect. Unless you're a dab hand at, say, Indian cooking one or two herb or spices suffices.

Fortunately for me, I'm a great cook. It's true that some people can overdo it by throwing all sorts of effect on things. It's fortunate for the both of us to have art backgrounds and enjoy writing so that we can succeed at both. :)
