As far as I know, May 7 is not any kind of a holiday in the U.S. It may be some ridiculous made up holiday like speak like a weirdo day or something. But not an official one. Why?

because it is over here (May Day - long weekend - woop!) so I'm thinking of biting the bullet and phoning the IRS and finally getting my tax number (just got another cheque with a wet bite taken out of it). With the time difference here in the UK we need to phone about midday and I've seen soooo many people say they've been kept waiting 30 minutes+ and I don't think my boss would appreciate me swanning off to make that call in work time.

Saxon thinks today is a holiday, have you read his thread?

I think we used to celebrate May Day but we ran out of pole dancers. ;)

I did see today is a holiday--May the 4th be with you all!

Nope, no official holidays on Monday. And I totally get the whole time difference having to call at noontime thing. Have had some past inlaws across the pond, and also have had some friends out in California, where the difference is only three hours but when I'm ready to go to bed, they're just getting started. :(

it's a royal pain in the ass, but at this point I'm actually starting to notice the money I'm losing to the IRS and it offends me.

Monday is an extension of the Mexican holiday 'Cinco de Mayo'. All the drunk Americans are sobering up and taking the day off.

I was working in my lab late one night
when my eyes beheld a weary sight.
An IRS dude arose from the vat
and took all my money and gave me a slap

He did the grab
He did the IRS grab
He did the Grab
Now I crawl like a crab.
He was no joke
He just left me all broke

It offends me too, greatly. But, when I lived in Canada, I tangled with the IRS when I did a lot of business in the US (NAFTA? What's that? Some Canadian thing?) - and there's no way I'm going through that again. No doubt I'm still on their computers, probably with a big red flag against my name. The 30% cut is the price I pay to stay below their radar.

As far as Amazon is concerned Traci, VAT is a straight pass-through - in from the purchaser (no matter where they live) and out to HMRC. We authors are not part of that process.

Oh...so does that mean that I don't have to take off the vat from my little check and send it to the HMRC? You are saying that VAT has already been deducting? Oh, I hope so...
