The moral: it is better to sell two books than to give 135 away.

If you hadn't been giving it away, you wouldn't have sold 135 copies, but you might have sold a third one.

It looks as though you probably have hidden formatting in your word file. You need to get rid of all formatting. The best way I have found is to copy your entire file into the notepad (located in Accessories) then copy it back into a fresh (blank) wordfile. After that you will have to reset your paragraph settings, then look through the file and fix what needs fixing. If this doesn't make any sense to you, you need to log onto Smashwords and follow their formatting guidelines. Good Luck!

Very few of us, actually.

I prefer to work in html because it gives me near-infinite control over how
the book will look. There's a steep learning curve, but the same seems to be
true of all other methods for submitting books to the KDP. The Kindle does
a fair job of converting *.doc files. If you want to go this route, here are
some resources:

The Smashwords guide usefully specifies the differences between various Word
releases. Ignore what it says about not using page breaks between chapters.

And be leery of people who answer by trying to sell you their book.

There is also a few of us that understand this really well and format our own books with a combination of xml, css, and html (or xhtml). If you want to try to do it on your own, I definitely encourage you to do so, if not, then there are professional formatters out there who can help you for a fee. I am one such person and if you are interested, I can talk to you further.

I like your list notjohn.
