What’s happened to this forum, where has all the Socratic irony gone? It seems to be full of selling, selling, selling. How can I sell more? Look at my web page/Amazon/ facebook/blog. Of course I’m guilty of this myself, I’ve promoted my books on this forum, and it’s made such a difference. (Yeah, right, keep deluding yourself).
But this is supposed to be the Voice of the Author / Publisher, asking other authors for their advice, their knowledge, their experiences. And what do we get?
'Authors seeking book reviews - List your books.'
'Authors. Please feel free to promote your book thread.'
'I'll tag your books, please tag my books too.'
And these are popular, judging by the amount of responses.
But I must say for a long time I have ignored these posts, mainly because they don't fire my imagination, they bore the socks off me.
I'll like my facebook friends, my fellow writers, even though many times their posts have seemed inane. But I watch for that nugget of gold, that snippet of silver that will, even at my mature age, teach me something.
I propose to Amazon that they introduce a self publicity forum where those that want to shout about their books can, and leave the Voice of the Author to those that want to talk about the process of writing.
Agreed. There's more than a whiff of desperation about all these "where have the sales gones?" threads. We're all experiencing tough times, but perhaps we should put our heads together and come up with solutions, rather than bemoan the problems.
So who's going to start us? Solutions on a postcard please...how do we get people to start buying books again?
I've only been on here since January so I truly don't know what the forum was like before that. I can say that it is truly the same way it was when I first got here. Well for me that is. I see the same stuff. I see the same authors nick picking with others, I see the same questions go up under different names that never get answered and I see the high traffic threads with several posts from the same group of posters. I even sit back sometimes and wait to see how long it's going to take for my own posts to either get buried under the pile or get attacked.
It's quite comical sometimes. There are posters that you can clearly see they really need help. I try to help when I can. I have bought so many books from this forum just because the author was attacked, to show some support. I've read many and left honest reviews. I never asked for anything in return.
I wish I had something to compare to. Hopefully there will be a positive change one day.
What you are putting forth is a bit of a challenge, and I think we should all accept it. The influx of new authors, however, will forever guarantee threads such as: "Post your atrocity here!" However, overlooking those, there are some nuggets of gold here. We do, however, tend to focus on problems in the main. A problem is that which gets your attention. That's by definition. So, we tend to see what's on people's minds. However, we do get the congratulations and the huzzahs, particularly when someone has a sparkling success. As you've said, you're already trying to focus on the positive side and the "good" questions. But here, it's sort of the same old same-o.
Maybe someone could write an Indie's Creed! I'll give you one for it right now:
"I promise that I will endeavor always to help in greater proportion than I seek help."
