Title pretty much says it all. I have some books on Smashwords that aren't doing much. I "unpublished" them there, but I understand that they're going to be available for a while longer.
I'm not interested in breeching KDP select Terms of Agreement because KDP select has been great for me so far. So, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this and could advise how long to wait before signing those books up for select.
I am learning the hard way that it is really difficult to get books taken down off the Internet. I am going back and forth with Amazon on one of my titles enrolled in the KDP select program that my old publisher, who I cancelled my contract with 18 months ago, still has up on some sites. I've told them repeatedly to pull, and Amazon is threatening me that I'm not adhering to the exclusivity clause because of distribution elsewhere - which I am not.
All I can say is do a Google search pages deep to make sure you don't find your book offered elsewhere. It usually takes a good three weeks to see them removed from Smashwords distribution. And if there's errors, then you have to email those sites and tell them to take it down.
Not only am I not getting the correct royalty from Amazon because of Smashwords, they actually have Amazon on my report now and they would not distribute my book to Amazon unless I made $1,000 dollars. So, I am getting 0.03 cents (listed on SW at 99 cents)per book at Amazon instead of 70% of $5.99. I'm very upset!
This is not Smashwords fault of]r a Smashwords issue. When you sign up with Smashwords and agree to their terms of agreement you already know where your books will be distributed. It says right on the Smashwords page when you unpublish a book that you should expect a delay of up to three weeks before your book will be unpublished elsewhere among the smashwords group of distributors.
So blaming Smashwords isn't going to do any good. If you prepare for KDP select ahead of time you will realize how many weeks it might take before you can safely put that unpublished book on KDP select.
