Question about ISBNs

I know some don't approve of the free or custom ones that can be purchased from Smashwords and CreateSpace, but I'm not yet in a financial position to purchase a block myself.

Right now, I purchase the custom ISBNs both places offer, so that I'm listed as the publisher, and they're listed as the distributors.

I've run into something a little weird, and can't seem to get a real answer at Smashwords.

When I purchase a custom ISBN from CreateSpace, it appears in my Bowker(myidentifiers) account, so that I can edit the associated title's information, upload the cover and interior file.

However, when I purchase the custom ISBNs from Smashwords, the first few were listed, then disappeared from my Bowker/myidentifiers account, and none since have ever been listed in it.

My answer from Smashwords was "If CreateSpace is reselling a "My Identifiers" ISBN, then that would explain why the author has control of it at Bowker."

Um, what?

Bowker is the only US source for ISBNs, unless something's changed when I wasn't looking. When I applied for a publisher's account at Bowker's, I received a myidentifiers account and that is the site Bowker sends you to purchase ISBNs through.

So I don't understand why there is a 'difference', and why those I purchase from Smashwords aren't also listed in my publisher's account at Bowker/myidentifiers.

Anyone have an answer to help me understand this, please?

ETA: When I visit the Bowker site to this page http://www.bowker.com/en-US/products/servident_isbn.shtml, clicking on the link to 'visit the product site' takes me to this page https://www.myidentifiers.com/isbn/main, which is apparently the ONLY way to purchase to ISBNs from Bowker.

This is why I'm confused about why there would be a 'difference' between the ISBNs purchased, since a myidentifiers ISBN seems to be the only 'type' there is.

Ah, a Bowker rep was finally able to answer.

CreateSpace registers you as the owner of the ISBN when you purchase a custom ISBN.

Smashwords apparently does not.

That's the difference.
