How do Canadian authors publish Kindle books? I see every country listed, but not Canada. Am I missing something totally obvious, or are Canadians not permitted to sell Kindle books on Amazon?

It would seem logical, except Canadians aren't permitted to publish, as far as I can see. If you're in Russia or Egypt or France, you can publish - but not Canada.

Many Canadian authors have successfully published on the KDP.

What you cannot do is a) publish through the Canadian store, b) buy an ebook (nor, I think, a Kindle) through the Canadian store, or c) receive direct payment to a Canadian bank. You must be paid by paper check, and you will have 30 percent withheld against US taxes until you perform various tricks with paperwork.

Gosh, that doesn't sound like publishing "successfully"! It sounds like a bureaucratic nightmare. Is this the only way Canadian authors can publish to Kindle? Does anyone know what's the reason for Amazon obstructing Canadian authors? Or does Amazon just have a hate-on for Canadians? I'm asking to see if there's any other way to approach Amazon (like through Estonia or Mexico, for example), or is it just plain hopeless to even try.

The situation is no different from that for Estonians or Mexicans. Actually it's better, because U.S. cheques can generally be negotiated in Canada without hassles or fees.

Amazon isn't obstructing anyone. They're obligated by law to withhold tax for foreign authors/publishers, unless those author/publishers submit the necessary paperwork to prove that they're exempt from U.S. tax on royalties (which you are, under the tax treaty, but you still have to declare your earnings as income in Canada).

If you dig around here you'll find plenty of threads about obtaining the ID number from the U.S. that you need for filing any forms.

Yes, it's a hassle, but try doing any kind of business across borders and it's no different.

Thanks for the reply. The Amazon method is far more difficult than ordinary cross-border business. We sell a lot of books using PayPal, for instance, and it's a no-brainer. No tax ID needed, no US bank account, no customs hassles. I would have thought that Amazon could have figured this out - especially since no merchandise is being moved. It's just e-books! It looks like either laziness or indifference on the part of Amazon. It doesn't make sense to this observer that they'd have such retarded business methods.

Of course you can sell books out of Canada any way you want. But if you're publishing through Amazon in the U.S., you become subject to U.S. tax laws. Throwing around words like "laziness," "indifference", and "retarded" doesn't alter the fact.

Hi folks.

I just wanted to say 'hi' to all the Canadian authors on this thread. Yeah, it would be nice if Amazon accepted paypal. Smashwords does! I would say, if you're a Canadian author, you should go Amazon and Smashwords because Smashwords also formats for Kobo.....

Take care,

I was finally able to get an EIN number from the IRS to forgo the 30% withholding tax (trying to get an ITIN was 3 years of wasted time - long story)

When I went to activate my account....CANADA was missing from the drop down menu.

Just so people reading this thread realize the question I have is WHY IS CANADA NOT listed?

I can't find KDP on Amazon.ca
I'm hoping it's just a technical hiccup.
I'm not impressed I haven't heard back from Amazon.

Any thoughts?

Presuming you're talking about the "Your Account" page on KDP, Canada is near the top of the drop-down list, not in its alphabetical place.

Thank you SOOO much. I couldn't find an answer anywhere online. Most dropdowns have the States first...sometimes Canada second...but usually Canada in alphabetical order.

I appreciate the help.

Here's a very good link posted from another thread concerning the non-US resident 30% withholding tax.
