I'm not going to go into too much detail but my slowest month was my first month. I sold 2569 in April of 2011. Since then, no month has been lower than 4,000. i Have one book priced at 2.99 and the others are about $5.00.

It's true, everything is relative - genre, length and price. Selling 1000 books sounds impressive, but if the price is only $.99 the author makes only $350, whereas 1000 books at $4.99 nets $3500. If one sells a book in a popular genre, it is not as impressive as a book in a genre with a very select group of potential buyers.

I wanna be you when I grow up. I'm a long way from those totals. That does it, I'm off to write more books. Sheesh.

I think what's happening here is that a lot of people are responding to my great promotional program, get to my books, say to themselves "eh, let's see what else is available" and then buy one of you folks' books.

If you guys had any conscience at all, you'd send me a percentage...

Well I have to say, I feel on a bit of a downer having seen everyone's figures on here lol. I have 3 children's novels/novellas, 1 short non-fiction guide and 2 short stories published. I published the first in Jan/Feb and the remainder month by month since then, with the last one going on in May. However, even though they have had good reviews and comments, I am only averaging between 80-100 sales per month across all of these titles collectively. I only have one up with Smashwords (and the associated retailers) and it has literally only just been approved for the premium catalogue, so up until now all sales have come from one source only. I would be thrilled to have figures anywhere near the ones that most of you have - I hope I get there one day :-)

I've been really reluctant to post my numbers because of posts like yours. Your numbers are good and I feel that displaying mine does not make one feel good. I just see posts that say authors can't make a living doing this and it sometimes makes me want to show that it can be done. That's what happened this time and you should in no way feel your numbers are bad. Compared to millions of authors on Amazon, you are doing quite well.

I'd erase the post now but it's too late, it's been copied in several others. Much of my success was publishing my books at just the right moment where they were seen on the first page in the hot new release list and they took off from there. There is also an element of luck in success that can't be discounted.

I do hope all of us have great success on this new journey.

Don't erase them, or stop posting about it when it's appropriate. I'll admit that too walked around for a few minutes after reading this thread feeling a little depressed. I sell about 40 - 50 a month of all titles combined, but even though some of my titles are very old, I really kind of walked away from it all for several years and have only just come back and started marketing again and putting up new stuff. So I can't complain too much. Still--while it can be a little disheartening to see the enormous numbers posted in this thread, at the same time, getting over the tinge of jealousy, it's nice to know that it's happening and can happen.

Oh no, don't be reluctant to put yours on at all! Although I said that I was on a bit of a downer, the upside to seeing these posts from people like you who are enjoying great sales levels is that it shows it can be done. It is still early days for me yet and I'm writing in a pretty difficult genre with children's books. Plus, you're right - when I think about the fact that some authors are selling little to nothing, I realise I'm doing okay :-) Onwards and upwards from here!!

As a more serious response to the OP's question than my previous post: any amount greater than the previous month is good. Keep it up!

Children's books were never going to work on Kindle.

Not many people will hand their $200 gadget to their 7 year old kid to break.

'Young adult' or 'teen lit' maybe, but children's literature was never going to have a market.

Until/unless Amazon release one of those unbreakable, completely waterproof, bright pink things and call it a 'Kid's Kindle' or something.

Stats like yours should serve as a great motivation to others, and serves as proof that people can achieve on this platform.

So don't feel guilty, you have certainly inspired me.

I will sell 1200(ish) this month, I now look at your stats and it gives me the drive to double that.

Yes, I've come to realise that over the past couple of months sigh. Still, I am selling more of them now than I was when they were gathering virtual dust on my PC so it's all good :-)

My short stories are for older readers, 16 upwards. They are only 99 cent shorts but they have received some great feedback. I'm currently taking a break from children's fiction and working on a compilation of short stories, so hoping that might do better.
