Should I publish now, or during the week? What is the best time?

I have finished my book, finished formatting and conversion, and should have the final cover sometime between now and Sunday. Should I publish as soon as I get the final cover uploaded? Or is a weekday better? Would Tuesday be better than Wednesday? Should I upload early Tuesday morning show it will show up as a new book around the time workers are taking their coffee breaks?

Advice from the experts is very appreciated. I don't want to rush now if a few days could make a difference.

Thank you.

The sooner the better really. It takes time for a book to be findable in searches. It will take hours to days (?) for your title to actually show as published anyway.

If you have also joined the KDP Select program or intend to, these sort of questions are what you want to ask, but as pertaining to KDP Select; not publishing to begin with.

Just do it. It can take up to 24 hours to load fully and then it can take up to a week for the Look Inside feature to load anyway. Hopefully soon, sometimes the whole thing is done in about 5 hours, but you can't control any of that, so you may as well get it up and started.

Ok, looks like you both agree. I am going to publish as soon as the cover arrives in my email box. Thanks.

When you publish is less important that when you decide to promote the book. Until you promote the book, no one will ever find it. As my wife tells me, the best way to keep your work hidden from the world is to publish it on Amazon.

Take it from the best and the rest, your book will not appear magically in front of workers taking their coffee breaks. That is the stuff of promoting, marketing, being discovered, or whatever term you want to coin. Twitter is the best use for getting some notice in front of people (in my opinion). So I hope you're at least engaging in the holy trinity, of twitter, facebook, and blogging. I hope you've done your homework and have an audience already waiting. Marketing is more time consuming than writing.

Have you edited it? Proofread it multiple times? Made sure it's the best it can be?

Honestly, I don't think it matters. Your book will be up and available for years. So as far as timing, it will eventually hit every possible slot and circumstance. What matters is your consistent online and ongoing presence and interaction with potential readers.

Only thing I can think of having an effect is if there's a day when publishers release new books...I seem to recall someone saying it was a Monday, but I may of course be wrong. But if there's a particular day that might have some effect. A Wednesday would ensure it's live on Friday, when sales usually pick up at the start of the weekend, but then my last one went live on a Sunday and sold 60 copies the first day.

Thanks for all the great responses. The cover looks great, and the book is PUBLISHED. It is showing up on Amazon, although it's still listed as publishing on my bookshelf. This is very exciting! Can't wait to see a first sale.
And yes, I know now the real work begins, I am going to enjoy the feeling of finally getting it published for a couple of hours before I begin marketing....

Thanks again to everyone who gave advice.

**Your book will be up and available for years**

This is the truly astonishing thing about ebooks. You NEVER GO OUT OF PRINT!

I am reading a wonderful book right now, written in German in the 1930s. It was translated into English in the 1940s, and an obscure publisher of military interest books put it out in hardback. The subject was the First World War, but the Second was just over, and nobody cared. I bought it for nine books on Amazon Marketplace, where it ranks about 2,900,000 in sales. It is surely one of the hundred best books I've ever read, and I have read tens of thousands. Better than A Farewell to Arms or All Quiet on the Western Front, to name two other WW1 novels. Yet nobody has ever heard of it, or read it.

That's the way it will always be, because there's no digital edition. A masterpiece lost.

On the other hand, the permanence of ebooks is horrifying. Used to be that the myriad of crappy books simply vanished--got pulped and made into cheap paper. Now the dreck has not only been multiplied many times by the KDP process, but it will be with us -- FOREVER!

Arrrrgh....

John, I totally agree that it's astonishing. I think eternal shelf-life will be the single most important factor when it comes to the impact ebooks have on the publishing paradigm (trad and indie).

Since books no longer have a shelf life, you can build an audience. It's no longer about getting as many sales as possible, as fast as possible before they're taken off the shelves.

I also agree that the flip side's pretty scary, but I'm totally willing to endure it in light of the benefits.

As to the OP, I agree with the others. When it comes to ebooks, there's absolutely no reason to wait before publishing (assuming the book is truly ready).
