I have edited my manuscript on my computer and on paper. I would like to use the DocsToGo app on my iPad to do it one final time. Does anybody know if making edits this way will mess with the formatting process - God knows it is already hard enough. I don't want to increase the level of difficulty.

While I don't for sure know your answer, I think it will depend on whether DocsToGo will output proper HTML code.

If the answer is yes, I think you are in good shape.

"I think it will depend on whether DocsToGo will output proper HTML code."

Being awfully liberal with the term "proper" there, aren't you CJ? I would rather say "code that will work well enough to get through Amazon's rather forgiving converter and make an e-book you can live with." :)

After experimenting with this today for a LONG time, I would not suggest it to anyone. Although you can set up a desktop folder which syncs easily, the quotation marks and apostrophes don't translate very well and look weird.

I have no idea what you are talking about, Punchy.

What is the proper term for "proper html"?

Did you look to see if there is an option to turn OFF automatic translation of those marks?

As an example, there is such an option in MS Word.

Ah come on CJ; you know there's no such thing as a word processor that outputs proper HTML. Even the best HTML editors like Dreamweaver create bad code now and then. It may squeak past Amazon's converter and read okay as a mobi file on most of the Kindle devices, but there will always be plenty of errors in that internal HTML file, and you'll never make an epub copy from it that will pass Epub Check.

Bottom line is that anyone trying to make mobi or epub files needs to know enough HTML and CSS to fix the errors that are bound to be present in any file coming from any WYSIWYG editor whether it's a word processor, an HTML editor, or a desktop publishing app. Liz Castro likes using InDesign to make epub files, but she admits that you have to open up the epub after the fact to fix the errors that are bound to be in it. Nothing is ever entirely proper in HTML without human intervention.

Replying specifically to:

No... that is NOT true, Punchy.

Well, maybe if it was two pages long and had no special formatting in it whatsoever. But a full length novella or novel with any degree at all of special formatting, even just simple italics or bold lettering, is going to have problems.

How do you do that in Word?

It’s called, “Modify Automatic Formatting Options”.

Exactly where to find it will depend on your exact version of MS Word.

Here it is for MS Word 2010:

File | Options | Proofing | AutoCorrect Options.

When you click AutoCorrect Options, you’ll get a panel of auto-correct options, including such things as “replace straight quotes with curly quotes” (From memory… I don’t remember the exact wording, but you can find it)...

There's also other interesting stuff there.

You probably should look through all those options and tick … or un-tick… options that you want or don’t want.

But… don’t forget… just because Word can display a symbol, that does not mean the Kindle can display that same symbol correctly.

That is exactly what I needed. It was mixing straight and curly quotes. Thanks!

That may just be that Amazon hasn't caught up with your latest input, yet.

I looked at Look Inside, and it doesn't look awful! grin

There is more space than I would have put between paragraphs, but that may be what you wanted.

What, specifically, was wrong with the formatting before you re-did it?

If you just did it, maybe the system has not had enough time to push the new info through. I also hear unpublishing causes a lot of problems. Search "unpublishing problems" and I will bet you find your answer. Good luck.
