I'd like to know more about Mobipocket e-books. I Googled the platform and looked through their pages, but it's far from the quality of this Kindle support site. (Congratulations to your gang, DTPAdmin!) I gather the Mobipocket books are for PDAs? People really read books on those things?

Can I just take the Word doc I used for the Kindle edition and fire it off to Mobipocket?

In another thread, a poster said he or she was selling book copies via Mobipocket than in Kindle editions. Is that a common experience?

Thanks! -- Dan

MobiPocket is the leading provider of eBooks, and supports readers on PDAs, smart phones, PC's (and through a seperate reader program Mac & Linux systems).

MobiPocket does not have a web interface for uploading your books - it has a PC application (Linux version coming, but not a high priority) that processes your source files & graphics and then builds a .PRC file that you can use on the various devices supported. Once the PRC has been built the Creator app has a built-in upload support for posting your eBook to the MobiPocket book store.

The one main advantage of the MobiPocket site over Amazon DTP is that DTP is strictly for Kindle eBooks, whereas MobiPocket is for a wide selection of devices and 3rd party retailers. Amazon pull content from the MobiPocket database so putting your book up on the MobiPocket site gives you a lot more visibility than the DTP site.

Okay, I think I understand: I download a bit of software which will guide me through the process of creating a Mobi-document. This is an Amazon sideline that was picked up from someone else, so doesn't seem as familiar.

And I should be doing this, right? People actually make money via Mobipocket?

Since I have first put my books onto the Kindle platform, and Kindle sucks up books from Mobipocket, is there a system in place (this is for you, DTPAdmin!) to prevent duplication?

Thanks. Blue skies! -- Dan Ford

There is nothing that prevents duplication, you have to decide which venue you will be using to host your eBooks and then not upload the book to the other.

So, in other words, if one already has a book up on Kindle, they cannot send the same book to Mobipocket, but vice versa is OK?

No, maybe I wasn't clear. You can publish to either one or to both. If you publish to both then you will see 2 of your books available in the Amazon kindle store. The Mobipocket one will have a sample chapter, the DTP one will not (at present).

I may sound uninformed but would you explain what a web interface is? My book is set for mobipocket, but I have no idea how to get connected to mobipocket.

My preference is that mobipocket sell the book and give me royalties. That way I do not have to figure out how to set up a web interface.

Is web interface the only want to go with mobiopocket? I have looked at mobi's website and it looks as if there are those two options but I can't see how to simply list my book with mobipocket.

Thanks for any help.

Well, this here DTP is a web interface, and a good one.

Mobi's is called Ebase or some such thing. Go to https://www.mobipocket.com/ebookbase/en/homepage/logon.asp which won't do you a lot of good because it's the log-in page for those with an account, but there are links there that should show you the True Path to enlightenment.

The way to keep Kindle and Mobi separate is to uncheck Amazon.com in your Mobi list of retailers. I think this is all-or-nothing. Evidently you can't just do it for one book.

Mobipocket did reset all passwords without notifying me. Now I cannot login anymore, and cannot open or read the books I have bought before. I have sent two messages to their support with my information, but they just ignored it. I lost all the books I have bought at MobiPocket and FictionWise. I therefore cannot recommend this company.
And there ar many more who have treated the same way from this company. Read this link https://www.mobipocket.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=42714&highlight=&sid=494a2df12b48a1e8fdca8ae0e7bfb752
