Hello,

I'm new here and am getting ready to publish a series of sci-fi shorts. I found an artist and author named Ronnell D. Porter and paid him for three covers (he gave me a deal). I've been trying to contact him with no success indicating that today was the last day. He could have been on vacation but who stays out of e-mail contact for over two weeks? His invoice included his address so I checked the local papers and found no mention of any accident or death (I really don't like to think everyone is a thief). So my question is, has anyone else been defrauded by this guy? Does anyone know him? I've already decided to contact another artist but was a little curious.

You actually checked obituaries?? Wow

Likely, he's just slacking off.

I would suggest making partial payments to artists and see the work before you pay the balance. If nothing else, it is more likely to motivate someone to meet a deadline.
Most artists will supply either a low-rez image of the work or a watermarked one for your review.

He has many books published so he does exist and I doubt he has "defrauded" you. I was unable to find any website for him via a Google of his name, but his books are on all the free download / file sharing sites in the first couple of pages of search results and he really needs to do something about it.

How did you originally find him?

I was trolling the interwebs for someone to do e-books and stumbled across him. I liked his work so. I don't think he defrauded me either which is why I went through the trouble of checking local papers and whatnot. Then I joined KDP where I found an artist.

You could tear the money in half, wrap it well and send it promising the other half of the bills when the work is finished.

It's always a risk when you hire somebody you don't know and don't have a brick and mortar location to go back to. I went about finding my cover art in a somewhat unusual fashion. I went on ETSY and searched for photographers whose work I liked and when I found several that I thought might work for my book, I emailed them asking if they licensed out their work for e-books. I found a GREAT cover at a really reasonable price. The other great thing about using an established photographer is that you already know what your art looks like, and there is no unfortunate surprises. I hope it all works out for you.

Smashwords has a FREE list of people for cover and format work.

My cover artist averages $55 per cover. Format $35 to $55.

You were invoiced and paid the invoice before any work was done or any results seen? That's just bizarre! I work as a graphic designer and typesetter I also write, and I've never heard of it, I invoice when the job is finished and delivered and then expect payment within a month. And most of my work is done via email.
There are many free photographs to download as well for those happy to try DIY.

You paid the artist in advance for covers you haven't received or even seen? If you have been ripped off, that would be a lesson learned.

"I've already decided to contact another artist "

So it seems you're accepting that you need to pay out more money for cover art. In which case, do take on board what peter62159 said.

Hey...I don't normally like to get involved with this sort of thing, but I have used him. Let me say this, I did have a couple of instances where I couldn't "find" him and I was a bit worried like yourself. But-- in his defense, I will say that he always surfaced...(-: I think, he is pretty young and has a lot going on and he just gets side-tracked...(-: We did have a couple of differences of opinion, but all in all he did me a good job..and I personally like him, but I am pretty easy going ---UNLESS you give me really bad work for my money and I have been taken once by someone that was on a Smashwords list and their work was horrible and I said, "Keep the money.." I went elsewhere. I have way over spent on formatting, but now I have a good formatter. It can take awhile to find good people. Back to Ronnell..I think he is quite talented and good luck maybe he is on vacation...or something...(-: In all honesty I can't remember how long I would go in between me e-mailing him and him not answering me, but maybe 4-5 days---can't recall. I had a bad situation where I felt kind of sorry for someone that I met on here, let them do some minor editing and then was pretty much threatened in a "soft" way that if I didn't let him do $450 worth of editing...SO--be careful and no, I won't give the name, but Amazon is watching them. Good luck and my experience with Ronnell was one of good work and like I said, I like him. He's probably just busy...or maybe not even getting your e-mails.

I visited Ronnell's website and sent an email questioning the situation. His response was very prompt. He reported that complications in his personal life caused the business interruption and regretted that it occurred. He said that you had initiated an action with Paypal and that all your money will be fully refunded.

We all have times in our lives where private matters consume most of our attention. For a small business person, it's imperative that you always maintain lines of communication with customers, but I can see how sometimes the personal issues overwhelm the practical issues.

The artwork on his site looks to be first class. If he can avoid such unpleasant issues in the future, I don't see any reason not to do business with him.

Thanks everyone. I've got an artist and my first e-book cover is finished and I really like it.
