I am a UK author, thus I will be getting a checque from Amazon for the .com sales. Now I haven't yet sorted out my ITIN and I wish to delay it. DO I just contact Amazon through support or is there a specific contact for this?
I can't answer your actual question, but I can tell you, from my own experience, that you can get your EIN (US tax number) in a matter of minutes if you call them. The numbner is +1 267 941 1099. They will ask about your name address etc. and issue the number there and then (and send you a letter to confirm it). All you need then is to fill in a form W-8BEN and send it to Amazon, which personally I did the same afternoon I had nmy number by phone..
Thanks, and I have contacted support. What you suggest seems to work for some and not others. When I called 2 separate people informed me I had to get an ITIN and NOT and EIN as that is for companies. It does seem rather dependent on who you ask. A few people I have spoken to seem to back this up, others don't. I have the form I just haven't done anything with them yet. I need the letter from amazon also. Anyone know if I can just print off the email or is there a specific document to send with the ITIN W7 form?
The advice you get DOES depend on who you ask. Some people at the USA embassy seem unaware that non-USA residents CAN get an EIN as a self emplyed ebook writer. Just call the number the nice person who answered your first question gave you. It is a part of the IRS that only deals woth foreigners wanting an EIN.
It is a foreign number, but if you use skype it only costs 1.5p a minute. I got my EIN in a call which cost me less that 50p - I have a blog post which explains it here http://artisansoap.co.uk/blog/2012/05/kindle-ebooks-and-the-irs/
Of course you could choose to do it the hard way and get an ITIN, but at least you can't claim you weren't told the easy way to get it done.
