I published a book earlier this year, The Mystery of Smugglers Cove, and sequel to that will be put out before Xmas. Since this is part of the series, all books will start with The Mystery of…

Possible thoughts of titles so far are below with pros and cons on them. See which one you like best, or suggest you own! Any thoughts welcome.

PREMISE OF STORY: Four children sail to a deserted island and encounter crooks. They work together to find out what they are up to how they can stop them.

The Mystery of Adventure Island
Pros: sounds exciting, they nickname island this name after catching the crooks
Cons: not sure about having ‘mystery’ and ‘adventure’ in title together

The Mystery of Ghost Island
Pros: exciting and mysterious title
Cons: ghosts do not feature much except at the start when the children learn that island is ‘haunted’. Afraid that some people might buy it expecting a ghost story when it isn’t.

The Mystery of Rocky Island
Pros: this is the official name of the island
Cons: might not be exciting enough

The Mystery of Bird Island
Pros: there are a lot of birds on the island
Cons: the birds are not really a factor in the mystery

Thanks.

I like 'The Mystery of Ghost Island.' Even though there may not be any ghosts on the island the children believe there are. Children love ghost stories.

I like The Mystery of Adventure Island. Unless the island is called Ghost Island, I would avoid the confusion of the name. The titles bring me back to my Nancy Drew phase. I would be interested if the stories drew me in the way good old Nancy did. I think the title should relate to the name of the island, even if it is the Nick Name like "ghost" island. Good luck.

As Keith Logan preaches. Always have a sub title. It help your book get found by potential readers.

If the first book is intriguing; audience captured.

"The Mystery of Smugglers Cove II."

"The Mystery Unraveled."

If it really isn't a ghost story then don't use it as a title. It would be too great a disappointment.

You may want to throw out "The mystery of" part unless there really is a sense of mystery in all of your sequels. Choose a title that reflects the storyline of smugglers/criminals. Or, in reference to the first book, you can title it "Return to smugglers cove."

Hope that helps.

Maybe you should try The Mystery of Haunted Island instead of Ghost Island, it's still a pretty good hook, and it's less specific.

Choosing a title is way harder than it appears at first, eh?

You could chose to focus on the crooks, or the loot that was taken; ie; "The Mystery Series: The Case of the Stolen Gold."
I only have three pieces of advice you can happily ignore.

1. The series is called "The Mystery Series." , so having the word "Mystery" in the book title is a bit redundant.
2. By Junior Detective writer's law, you MUST write one zoo and one museum based book. :)
3. You can get away with a silhouette cover on your first book, but at some point the reader is going to want to see the children they're reading about in more detail.

I would LOVE to be able to hire this guy, but he prolly retired a few decades ago. http://www.e-reading.org.ua/illustrations/150/150130-cover.jpg

Congrats on your series, it could really take off!
