Dear all,

Thank you for your time for this thread.
Would like to ask a couple of question, where i am unable to find a answer in amazon FAQ.
I was about to upload my book but before that,

1. Can i place my book as $0.00 without joining KDP Select ?
I see someone who is able to do so, as i am able to download their book without being the prime member.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E09EC4W/ref=pe_245070_24466410_M1T1DP

2. If i can place my book as $0.00 , will they be able leave any review?

3. For a new book, what is the best way to get review?
I know, when i gift my book to my friends, they are unable to leave a review right ?
So it better for them to just purchase my book and leave me a review and i buy them coffee instead?

Thank all!

1. No. The only way to place your book at $0.00 is during the promotional days allowed by joining KDP Select (5 free days every 90 days). The only way to have AMAZON place your book at $0.00 is via a price match to it being offered for $0.00 elsewhere. There is no guarantee Amazon will do this.

2. Yes, books "purchased" for $0.00 can still receive reviews.

3. When you gift a book, you are really sending a gift card and the recipient can spend it on anything they choose. No guarantee they will buy and/or read your work. It is against KDP TOS for family/friends to review your book. Someone does not need to buy a book to review it. The best way to get reviews is to write a book, publish it, and wait for honest reviews to come in. If your work moves people (either positively or negatively) they will hopefully be compelled to leave a review. There are some blogs/websites where you can offer a copy and request honest reviews, but be warned they will generate just that; honest reviews. They may not all sparkle and shine with rainbows and goodness. I would NOT recommend buying reviews, especially from friends. (A cup of coffee for a reviews is well, basically buying a review).

Hope that helps...

Welcome to KDP!

You can't "set" your price to zero. As I'm sure you've figured out, 99c is the normal minimum, though if you're in Select you can get 5 free days every 3 months. (If you want them.) Someone whose book is free may be using their free days.

The only way to be perma-free is to NOT be in Select, publish your book somewhere else, like Smashwords or iTunes, which does allow perma-free, and see if Amazon will price-match. Sometimes yes, sometimes not.

(But many of us will argue against the free concept anyway. It reduces sales for everybody.)

Anyone who has bought anything from Amazon, a book or a camera or a toaster or etc., can leave a review. They don't have to have bought the book they're reviewing. Amazon does frown on friends-and-family reviews as being "perhaps" biased, though I'm sure there are a lot of them up there that Amz doesn't know about.

Guys,

Thanks for all the help.
I think there is some changes, can't seem to leave a review without purchase the book .

When i try to review some random item:

"To submit a customer review: you need to use an Amazon account that has successfully been charged for the purchase of a physical or digital item. Free digital downloads don't qualify. You don't need to have purchased the product you're reviewing. There's a 48-hour waiting period after your first physical order has been completely shipped, or your digital item has been purchased, before you'll be able to submit your review. Learn more about writing customer reviews."

Kindly advice?

Thanks!

You must be using an account that has never been used to purchase an item on Amazon.com (or whatever store you're trying to review on). I believe there's a 48-hour lag after the purchase, before the review.

As the email said, it doesn't have to be the book you're trying to review, but the lack of Verified Purchase on the review will detract from its value.

Notice also that you can't review your own book.

Good luck! -- NJ

Thank all for the feedback.

One last question , if i were to place on KDP Select , within the 90 days,
I used up finish my 5 days promotion on the first 30 days, does that mean i can distribute to my other channel already?
Since the 5 days is used up, there is no harm in anything violating the Term right ?
Right after the 90days, i just have to remove my digital copy in other channel and apply again for KDP Select

Thanks!

KDP is not only for the free 5 days...it also gets you borrows so the answer would be no. You have to exclusive to kdp for all 90 days.

If you violate the terms--which you already agreed to, it's a legal CONTRACT--they might keep all the money you earned during that time, and/or terminate your account. Please don't do that.

90 days is just not that long. Wait it out.

The book doesn't "do" anything on Amazon except exist for sale. If you use the 5 free days, then it will earn nothing if it is downloaded during that time. On other days, the book will earn money if anyone buys a copy. If you want the book promoted, then you have to promote it. You are the business person--selling it is your job. Amazon is the storefront. For reviews, you can try contacting bok reviewers and bloggers in your genre. Be aware that it can take them a few months to respond to your request, and then another few months to post a review. Be patient. (Of course, never, ever, ever send out a book to a reviewer that has not been edited and proofread to a professional level.)

Did you read the terms of service? A lot (well, all) of your questions are answered there. If you are having trouble understanding some parts, is there someone near you who can explain them to you? Or paste in here the sections that you don't understand.

Hi 1001nightspress,

Thank for you reply.
Can i conclude that if i join KDP Select ,
Let say i have a book that place at $0.99 USD,
During the 90days the book is free for prime member,
But Only the 5 days i promoted is free for all member only, the rest of the 85 days will be placed at $0.99 USD right ?

This 2 link below , show that they are using the free promotional tool that why i am able to download without being a prime member?

Amazon demands 90 days of exclusivity in return for up to 5 freebie days. They lose money on those freebie days, sending out, using their own bandwidth, books for which they don't get a cent. They feel that three months of exclusivity in return is not onerous.

It would be silly of them to just make you be exclusive for the 5 days you were free. There would be absolutely nothing in it for them, because all the people who were "forced" to buy from Amazon (as the book was available nowhere else) would be getting it for free.

Edited to add:
During your 5 freebie days, anyone can get the book for free. That's why you're seeing lots of free books. You don't have to be in Prime to download a freebie. A member of Prime can, however, "borrow," once a month, a book that has been enrolled in Select, even though it isn't having a freebie day. The Prime member pays nothing, but the author gets about $2 for the "borrow." I do recommend re-reading the TOS.

No, that is not correct.

Honestly--DID you read the terms? I gather English is not your first language, but since it's an important legal contract, you really need to understand all of what you signed. Find someone to help you read through all of it.

But for your question--when your book is free, it is free to everyone, not just Prime members. That's why you can download free books. Anyone can. It has nothing to do with being a Prime member.

When your book is not free, Prime members could choose to borrow it--although usually they don't bother to use their one borrow allowed per month on a book that costs .99. A Prime member can borrow one book a month. If you ask me whether you get paid for that, I will ask you again to please read the Terms of Service, because they are important. ;)

Everyone will be able to buy your book at the price you set for it. If that's .99, then yes, for 85 days, everyone (Prime members and everyone else) would have to spend .99 to buy your book.

I know Singapore well. Beautiful country, and very nice people.

Find someone with excellent English and get them to go over all the Terms of Service with you. It's for your own protection!
