Has anyone ever entered a Writers' Digest contest with their Kindle book? One of the rules is to "enter online. Acceptable file types include .epub, .mobi, .ipa, etc.," but I don't know where to find the document file to enter. Does anyone know if it's even possible? Thanks!

Isn't the file on your computer? Assuming you wrote the book? I haven't seen those contest rules, but I'm 99.9% sure you could only enter a book you wrote. So, just upload it in one of the file formats they request. If you have to upload an .epub or .mobi, you can use Calibre (a free download) to create one.

Yes, I have the .doc file, but I wasn't certain where to look for any file that had the extensions they were looking for. Why on Earth would I want to enter someone else's work? I'll look into Calibre. Thanks--but I could have used the information without the judgment.

I didn't see a spec of judgement. Not even a crumb.

Yeah and you wonder why ... there is a clear example of two people turning on a person asking a genuine question ... I hope you are proud of yourselves.

You want to know something? There was a time when we could be proud of ourselves. Proud of people like nightpress who never stinted in their attempts to help others.

Sadly, attitudes like yours and Kimberly's are what has caused many helpful people to simply not bother aymore.

If you believe that the reply to Kimberley was in any shape or form "helpful" or was actually intended to be then god help us.

Alasdair, there was ZERO judgment in either person's replies to the OP's posts. Why do you feel the need to stir s*it where none exists? Please go away or learn to be more civil. Otherwise I'm just going to report all of your posts as harassment, because that is basically what you're doing. Harassing the more experienced authors who are only trying to HELP.

Totally agree zombdiva! The original replies were not judgmental. The OP's question implied that she didn't know how to find a file on her own computer. I thought the original response to the OP was fine. But no, here we go again. It is getting ridiculous.

The topic in question from the OP is titled "I am interested in submitting my novel to a contest" and the initial response asks the question, "Assuming you wrote the book?"

I can understand where some people see judgment. What I see is an answer so unhelpful as to be worthless.

OP: If you still care, go to your KDP bookshelf and click on the title of that book. At the very bottom of the first publishing page there is an option to "Download the preview file of your book." This will download your entire book in .mobi format (Amazon's native format) and you can submit that to Writer's Digest.

Best of luck!

While your answer to the OP's question may have been more helpful, it's not exactly fair to frame the other poster's replies as "judgmental", "unhelpful", and "worthless". The intentions were well meaning, and was not given with any sort of negative intent implied. Some people need to chill out. But then again, this wasn't the first time you've assumed something wrongly and posted it in these fora.

It was entirely unhelpful.

Lots of folks simply upload the Word .DOC file to KDP and have success doing just that. They know nothing of Caliber, or Sigil, or all the other stuff we talk about here. It is entirely possible (I submit likely) that the OP is one of those people, and had no idea how to provide the file in the format she needed.

But reasonable people can differ. I just think some folks spend so much time here, or are so experienced, they forget what it was like early on.
