Is anyone eles experiencing having categories reduced without republishing?

I have a number of ebooks that had 4-5 categorizes assigned that are suddenly being reduced to two categories, or in a couple of cases to only one category.

I have not not republished these titles through KDP.
I did edit the book info to add a list of titles. Are we penalized and punished for editing things in author central?

Thanks
Elizabeth

Categories past those you chose are assigned by an algorithm that looks at your keywords. Make sure that your keywords come early in your blurb or description. In fact, you should probably put a line at the start that explicitly describes its genre. For example: "A paranormal teen (Young Adult) romance." I put "teen" because Amazon does not have a YA category. It's important to align your description and blurb with the available categories Amazon has that you want to be in. When you edited your descriptions you may well have messed them up. You might consider putting things back the way they were. Any other books or lists should go near the bottom.

It's a glitch that's been going on all day. Some people have had their categories restored, some haven't yet. Nothing to do but sit tight, I think.

Ok good... I was worried as well. My book is pretty much always in the top 10 Free Satire Novels but suddenly disappeared from all rankings despite the numbers remaining fairly consistent. Good to hear it's an overall site glitch.

Hopefully they're re-tooling so it's easier to find book reviewers in your category too! (highly wishful thinking.)

I thought it was just me for a second. I lost a number one spot that I've been holding for a week and a bunch of top ten spots. The books vanished from the categories altogether. I've been freaking out all day. I hope they get it fixed soon.

Yes! This just happened to me today. Was in the top 50 of western romance one minute, and no longer considered western romance the next, having been reduced to contemporary romance category without republishing. As a result, I republished, using only the western romance category and lost the contemporary, (I did have both listed) and though the update is now "live" there has been no change. Worried my sales will drop because of it.

Yes, here too. I was in the top 20 in three categories (#4 in paranormal suspense) and two have disappeared. I emailed Amazon earlier but am happy (well, sort of) to see I'm not the only one. Even the big name books that shared my post-apocalyptic category (like Wool) were moved to places like hard science fiction. So it does seem like a glitch.
Hoping it's fixed soon!

Some years ago you could choose up to 5 categories.
Nowadays you can only choose 2 categories.

Amazon may be changing the old publications were people had 5 categories

It's an issue that's been going all day, and it's affected rankings and sales of a great many people.

Amazon's site crashed on a world wide basis earlier today. Before getting wound up, consider if it's just a temporary problem.

K zaugg- Nope, no change. I received an email saying they needed a few days to work on the issue.

Between this happening yesterday, and the crash today that Laura mentioned, it sounds like major technical difficulties are afoot. Fingers crossed they work it out soon.

Thanks, Laura; you've got a point. And Sarah - yes. Fingers crossed here too. Paranoia isn't pretty, but in this case it's hard to squelch. :)

Happened to me too, and my sales have definitely been impacted. Very alarming!

I wonder if this will be a permanent change.
