Something different: My paragraph indents DID NOT come through

I know there are a lot of complaints about the forced paragraph indents on the Kindle, but I wanted indents, and so I very carefully used Word's indent function (using the ruler to create initial paragraph indents, not tabs or spaces). In Word it looks fine. When I export the HTML and open it in a browser, the indents are also there. But after publishing yesterday, and downloading my story for Kindle, there are no indents! Every first line is flush left, making the story fairly unreadable.

So today I need to reformat and re-publish, but since both Word and HTML seem to display the initial indents just fine, I'm not entirely sure what to look for. Any help out there?

If you open the html in a text editor like NotePad, you will no doubt see a line or two of utter garbage at the beginning of each paragraph. With luck, it will be the same garbage. In that case, simply do a global replace in favor of <p>. If there are multiple variations, then you'll need multiple search/replace attempts.

Word in my experience was never a very good way to create an ebook. With these paragraphing problems, it now seems worse than it ever was.

You can also try this: use Gmail or Google docs to create a new html file from your Word doc. I've done this with Word 2000 and it works pretty well.

The use of the ruler to set indents in MS Word is just a stopgap measure. It’s ok for a single page or a short document, but it is not appropriate for a book or a longer document.

That’s not to say that some people don’t get away with it sometimes, but it’s not good practice.

To create a professional-looking book, set up your MS Word Template and Styles to display your Kindle file to its best advantage.

It doesn’t take long to set up properly, and the time invested will pay big dividends in terms of saved time down the road, as well as a more professional-looking book.

Explanations, easy-to-follow instructions, and Kindle compliant styles, are in the first few pages of CJ’s Easy As Pie Kindle Tutorials… see link below.

Thanks for that tip, notjohn. I'll give that a try.

And I have been following your guides, CJ, which are so wonderful. My "normal" style is set up with an indentation, but I did not use the "Special" setting, just the "Indentation" setting. Does that make a difference?

I do know HTML but I was really hoping not to have to go through and format by hand.

Yes, indeed, it makes a difference!

You have found your own error.

Since you also set an indent with the ruler, that may also have played a part, although the only thing I could suggest would be to return the ruler to its default position.

There is no reason to use HTML unless you have some formatting need that Word can't handle.
