Has anyone else noticed that you can run an Amazon giveaway for physical products now?
Visit a print book page, for example, on your pc or laptop. Scroll down to the bottom of the page where you see the cover again. There should be info there about running an Amazon giveaway.
I just ran Amazon giveaways for a couple of my books. It's cool. Amazon hosts the contest, decides the winners, and sends the books out for you. You buy the books from Amazon, including potential shipping, in advance.
You have to promote your giveaway through your blog, FB, Twitter, email newsletter, getting bloggers or websites to mention your contest, etc. Use the #AmazonGiveaway hashtag when you tweet your giveaway. (Check out this hashtag if you'd like to find contests to enter. I saw a cool one for a guitar.)
You find out on the spot if you won. There's no waiting and forgetting. (Didn't win? Hmm, maybe I should buy it...) You can add the option to have entrants follow you on Twitter to enter the contest.
You set it up so that 1 out of N customers wins. You can choose N. The contest runs for one week.
Remember, you need to have a print edition to run an Amazon Giveaway. (Ask yourself if the possible benefits are worth the cost of your book plus shipping.)
Thanks for the pointer! It's an interesting program, though I'd like it better if (like Goodreads giveaways) we could provide the book and do the mailing (about half the cost of paying retail plus shipping).
That's true. It's interesting that Amazon Giveaways allow you to run a contest for something other than your book. You could have a contest for a jump drive, or a bookmark, for example. I'm not sure if that's better or worse, though you might have a popular contest giving away a popular product.
One key difference is that you can control how many people enter the contest per products given away. I entered a few contests, and my chances of winning varied from like 1 in 25 to 1 in 1000 (and the possible range is greater than that). I wasn't lucky enough to win, though.
