With millions of books and an influx of new books every hour,
How much do authors really make?

That varies wildly. Really wildly.

It depends on a lot of factors. More books generally means more sales, but not necessarily.
Genre has a lot to do with it. Skill.

Some for no reason that can be determined never sell a copy. Others sell a lot for no reason too.

The average figure trotted out is around $500 but that is influenced by the small number that do really well.

Many...nothing at all.
Many...enough to splurge on a fancy coffee one a week. You know, like the $6.00 Grande Java with a drop of vanilla and chocolate sprinkles.
Some...enough to improve the quality of life, but not enough to quit the real job.
The blessed few...enough to live on as the sole source of income.
A handful among millions and millions...more than enough to live on and a bag of golden chips.

It varies hugely, from zero to 100's and 1000's.

Little joke here:
I knew a man who sold thousands of books monthly and made lots of money. That was until he sold his book store and dismantled his printing press which printed out 20 dollar bills.

How much do authors really make?

The vast majority make little or nothing, once they've exhausted sales to friends and family. A few may make a few thousand dollars a month, though their identities will likely change each month as the successful ones find traditional publishers or by Amazon itself (which has several book imprints of its own).

Last week for the first time ever, books published through the KDP won three spots on the Wall Street Journal list of (ten) best-selling e-book novels (and one on the non-fiction list). None is enrolled in Kindle Select, and I will bet that two of the four will be traditionally published within a year.

Before you ask, all the novels were wet-panty literature.

There are probably a very large number who get a net minus from their efforts. i.e. they spend more than they make.

Way to sneer, Notjohn. Also, why would they tradpub when they're already selling at that level? It's not necessary for foreign rights or movie deals.

How about some data? This post: http://www.thepassivevoice.com/01/2015/indie-authors-quitting-their-day-jobs-2015/ and the links it contains are worth the read.

I haven't replaced the day job. Yet. But it is a very, very good day job.

True, most won't sell a lot, but then, most won't treat it like a business either.

Good point, though from the posts I see here not nearly enough self-pubbers put money into their books, not even for a professional cover. (Which is, in fact, the only money I put into mine. But in my defense I once worked as a publications editor, and I married the girl who took my job when I left it.... Oh, and I do spend money on maintaining several websites, $60/year for the hosting and about the same or a bit more for the various domain names.)

Ref.

Plus the "blessed few" as you say, also get the golden goose (early Christmas bonuses called gifts that employees, the minions like to buy their bosses each year) :) You know, the glow in the dark Rolex watches j/k.

But here , in the form of bonuses for being tops by Amazon CEOs every other month or so. It always seems to "go to the top" in life, with few crumbs to the masses left over.

Oh well, I'm on the lowly list, but its steady anyway, and for that I cannot complain.

Even though I rec'd no sales from promotions this month, I think anything that gets your name out there is perhaps worth it in the end.

30 Sales and 60plus borrows = something or other like dinners at the buffet out this month and a clear conscience to boot as no "wet panty" books either Borrows pay about $1.40 with the "bonus" I hear.

Back when all books were physical books, most authors made under $10,000 a year--and these were the successful ones!

These days there are a lot more ebooks published a year than physical books, yet three-quarters of all book sales remain physical books. This tells us something...

Agree with the fact that people might get negative returns.

What's funny is how many people are making money claiming to promote books.
Review services, email promotion , free book lists and advertising.
This stuff costs 10's to hundreds of dollars.

Well at least someone is making money off of books. It's sad that it's not the author :-(

How much do self published authors make?

Nothing.

Less than $100, ever.

A little.

A lot.

Very big bucks.

It depends on the individual writer: talent, very hard work, luck. At least two of those elements must be in operation at all times for a writer to make a modest amount or more money.

Which is pretty much how it was in traditional publishing.

It has been (accurately) said that the vast - the huge - majority of self-published books are the slush pile made visible.

One difference from the old days is that a larger number of writers can make a little bit of money, or even sometimes a modest amount (usually quite modest) than could before.

How long is a string?

Ooh, ooh, I know that one. A piece of string is twice the distance from the center to one end. See, there's an answer for everything.

On the subject of making money, the folks doing best these days seem to be the one's milking the KU system. Here's the formula: Every day on your lunch hour, write a new 'book', then 'publish' it when you go home. Erotica is best, but make it look like a romantic novel. It should be at least five pages long and sell for 99 cents. Then get a real sexy cover of a handsome half-naked man (sorry, I'm not available for photo shoots) and give it a title like, 'How to marry a millionaire.' (photo stock images are fairly cheap). Amazon will then pay you a dollar forty for every book someone borrows. Take advantage of that for as long as you can because I don't think it'll last forever. I've heard there are people making five figures a month doing exactly what I just said. Join the party and get yours while the getting is good.

One of my books sold two copies yesterday. As a result of those two modest sales, the book rose 100,000 in the rankings and reached the top fifty in its genre. To me, that strongly suggests that most people are selling almost nothing. Don't give up the day job just yet.
