Hello.

I'm a bit confused about selecting categories for my book. I selected categories I wanted my book to be in by looking on the Kindle ebook store. However, when I went to pick categories for my book through KDP, the breakdown of the categories doesn't appear to be the same, and some of the subcategories don't even seem to be offered as options. Could someone please explain why this is the case and how I can get my book placed in the exact categories/subcategories I want?

Many thanks. Stefan C.

Hello Stefan,
I do hope you don't mind my adding to your thread as this is exactly the question I, too, wish to ask.
I have two options but end up with three categories - how does that come about?
Also, the categories I wish to choose are not given as options. I am in UK.

Does the machine choose to add from keywords that you supply?

I do hope that this thread is answered.

As peelbooks1 suggests, the categories that actually display are influenced by the keywords you select. Amazon uses them in particular for subcategory placement, so think carefully about what choices might get you into the locations that best fit your book. You can adjust if needed, but I think you can also contact customer support and ask them to change the placement if your book is in the wrong category.

I think the initial processing may be automatic, but I'm not sure. It does seem to be handled differently for different country stores. On one of the my books, the subcategories are different in the UK than they are in the US.

There are lots of categories that only show up if you use specific keywords. That's explained in the FAQ called Selecting Browse Categories. Search for those words in the forum search box and you'll find the link. I've posted it myself many a time. There's a section on that page called something like "categories with keyword categories." find your book's main category and click on it to see additional categories and the keywords required to get them.

There are other things KDP adds to the categories, such as "short reads" for short stories, plus an estimate of the time it takes to read the material. It also adds "single author" or "anthology" for short stories, and I'm sure there are other things that I've just never noticed that don't show up only for short stories.

Stefan, this is one of the Great Mysteries...

I have a book about the Vietnam War that reached no 10 in genre in Agricultural Machinery several years back.

I think ZON employs little droids that go around gesturing hypnotically .... "These are the categories we're putting you in..."
