Biography I have been illustrating children's books, comics, magazines and games for over 30 years for big and small publishers. My focus is on drawing characters which the reader can connect to with a warm and approachable style. I try to capture the critical moment of eye contact and gesture that expresses the character's emotions and helps drive the story in the readers imagination. My most recent project is embarking on an exciting new series based around the adventures of a Viking boy called Little Moose, his dog Wolfie and friends, which I am self publishing with Amanda Boulter. In the world of comics I illustrated the epic tale, Mirabilis - Year of Wonders, written by Dave Morris. I have a love of maps and made a minor splash in the world of choose your own adventures by illustrating most of the maps for the Fighting Fantasy series of game books back in the 80s and 90s. I also enjoy designing cutaways that reveal the inner workings of buildings, machines and even whole starships, my two favourites being Haunted Castle and The Apartment Book published by Dorling Kindersley (now sadly out of print). I love to weave little stories and details that the reader may miss at first, but find and enjoy every time they revisit the illustration. I work with a mixture of traditional and digital media, sometimes one or the other or mixing them depending on what is required. Over the years I have become fluent in all aspects of graphic production and can create books from initial concept all the way through to print ready files. I am also able to animate, both traditional frame animation and in 3D CGI. At a hobby level I am working on learning game programming in Unity 3D. I just love the idea of making my images move and interact with the player, though with the complexity of it I doubt you'll see me release a game for quite a while! Most of my other interests overlap with my illustration work. I love board games, computer games (though these days I have no time to play beyond booting up for a quick look!), rpg games and when/if I ever retire I would love to build detailed cutaway models of fantasy castles. I also enjoy designing card model kits as can be seen with my Fantasy Cutouts and Playrama download printables. A handful of times in the year I get to dress up as various characters from dark ages mythology and run about a field in Devon with others engaged in live action role play battles. I live on the Devon/Somerset border in a rather tumbledown 400 year old cottage and work from my studio at the top of the garden. For exercise I love to get out on my bike exploring the local lanes and testing myself on the hills, which start right outside my front gate. On a more formal note I attended Brighton Polytechnic (now Brighton University) attaining a first class degree in Illustration along with an MA.
