KDP print template word - how to move those mid page titles?

I'm formatting my first print novel using the template downloaded from KDP (5x8).

I'm a bit of a word novice and I can't work out how to move the "acknowledgements" title (I want to use it for a foreword instead, so I don't want it starting so low on the page).

I've spent several hours with all the formatting options I'm used to using, but can't figure out how to make this top line start nearer the top of the page. For chapters, they used a simple return (x6) to move the chapter heading lower. But for the Acknowledgement (and others) there's some kind of invisible formatting going on.

Does anyone know how this is set?

thanks

The print book thru Kindle is in beta stage. Most of us are sticking with CreateSpace for paperbacks.
You have to upload a PDF for that though. What you put there is what you get.

Can you not just treat the Foreword as a chapter, deleting the acknowledgements section? I confess I didn't use the template for my print book, I just created a PDF using OpenOffice Writer, a free alternative to Word which produces a PDF with a higher dpi resolution than Word can.

I am unable to locate the template that you speak of. Maybe if you can post a link I can take a look.

On page 2 in the manuscript section there is a little blue link to "download a template". I haven't clicked on it as the system might go into a tailspin if it thinks I am going to submit a new manuscript. :)
Probably best to start a new test book you can delete rather than play with a real book.

The page starts low because your header is too big. From up on your toolbar click to Insert Header. From that drop-down, click to Edit Header. This will show you where your headers/footers are aligned. Put your cursor in the header that needs to be reduced.

Back up on the toolbar, click the Page Layout tab. You should then see Page Setup on the bottom of that section, and to the right of that, a tiny (almost invisible) arrow. Click that, and you’ll get a popup for Page Setup. Within that popup, click the Layout tab (the third tab over). About halfway down that popup, you’ll see “Vertical Alignment.” Click to make sure it’s set to Top. This will reduce your header to the proper size.

Edit to add: CreateSpace does the same thing on certain pages - I have no idea why. I suppose they think that format works better on those pages - but it depends on what the author wants to actually put on that page.

KDP Print Beta was rolled out at the end of September. The process was buggy, and it seems to remain so to this day. The quality of the books that actually go on sale is rather low, as you can see by doing a search on Amazon for Independently published (you won't believe how bad most of these are!).

Its sole advantage is that the author-publisher gets to see his or her paperback sales on the same page as the Kindle sales. But really, how big an advantage is that? How many seconds does it take, really, to check one's sales on Createspace--ten seconds, thirty seconds?

In exchange, you get that buggy publishing process, no physical proof copy, no discounted author copies for gift or resale, and no distribution to Barnes & Noble or to brick-and-mortar bookstores. (Most small bookstores will, as a favor to a customer and perhaps a small surcharge, order a Createspace or IngramSpark paperback.)

My advice is to stick with CreateSpace with its excellent cover wizard, helpful community forum, and direct-to-author discounted sales.

Good luck! -- NJ

hi Melinda

thanks for your reply. The header appears to be fine. The title is set to be lower down (for some reason) in the original layout - it's just I would like to be able to move it and I can't work out how. The first line starts well below the margin.

This is a link to the original doc: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/G/01/00/00/75/04/95/48/7504954870.doc

Makes sense. But the section for acknowledgements was set up for roman numeral pages then the first chapter starts on page 1. But I guess I could set that up, with some investigation. I just wondered if there was a simple way to edit the existing formatting instead.

I worked out the answer:

So, the text was centered vertically for the acknowledgements section. Simple enough to switch it back to "top".

Thanks everyone, again.
