I am soooo close to getting my book on KDP.

My only problem now is that all the photos in the last half of the book disappear when I upload it.

Any ideas?

This happens if you just copy-and-paste your images into a Word file. Use the "insert" command instead. Good luck1

Thanks, but I did not cut and paste any photos. I used the insert function in word.

I thought perhaps the file sizes were too big, so I went through and resized them all in photoshop to 72 dpi. It is still knocking out photos in the last 20 pages. Wonder what the total file size limit is.

Did you perhaps follow Amazon's advice and save / export your Word doc as html / a web page? That introduces a problem with respect to photos.

File size has nothing to do with it. Either the book goes through or it gets rejected; I've never heard of anything getting trimmed off the end.

Simply inserting photos can indeed inflate the size of a book, if you don't edit them for size and heft beforehand in a photo-editing software (I use Photoshop Elements, but I'm told Gimp -- which is free -- can also do the job). But we are assured that if we upload images larger than Amazon's recommended size of 127 KB, then they will be degraded in the publishing process. I've never checked this, so I don't know if it's true.

Other than that, since I upload my books as epubs, I can't help, sorry!

Good luck! -- NJ

Amazon's current advice is to upload the best images you have. I didn't take that too literally as the originals I had were all between 3 and 10Mb and I had 180 of them. I reduced them to under 400 Kb each which resulted in an epub file upload which was about 80Mb with a typical download from Amazon being about 21Mb. It all worked fine which should show file size is very unlikely to be your problem and trying to make your pictures smaller won't do any good I think.
I can only guess there must be something wrong with your file but it would be useful to know how many images you have and a typical size of one.

largest photo file is 602 kb, but most are under 100. The photos that don't show up in the book, are also not visible in the photo folder created when I make the web page, filtered file. There are "place holders" for them, but the file size is 1 kb and no preview shows up. I should also mention that when I resized photos, a few more showed up, but surprisingly the larger files!

Thank you NJ - I do use photoshop, both elements and creative cloud. The text is all there, but where a photo should be is just a line. And, though there is a file for the missing photos, there is no preview when I look at the photo folder created when I made the html folder. So sad......

It sounds as if the missing images were never uploaded if they are not present in the image folder. Did you move their location on your pc after inserting them in the document? I suggest you need to go back to your document and try making the HTML filtered file again. If the images are still missing from the image folder then try deleting them from the document then re-insert them and try again. :)

Good to know the trick. I have been inserting and sometimes copy and paste images into the document and had no issues.
Now I know there is a huge difference between inserting and pasting.

I hope the problem is now resolved?

Denise, if you are following Amazon's advice and uploading an html file, you must zip the html file together with the Images folder created by Word (assuming you used Word), and the pointers in the html must point to the right place.

A better solution is to upload the Word doc with all the photos inserted. (The best solution of course is to upload an epub, again with all photos in place, where you can actually see them and control them.)

If it's a one-time, one-off publication, you might consider hiring it done. I would recommend Hitch at booknook dot biz, Charlie at ebookpioneers dot com, or David at liberwriter dot com. All three have posted here in the past, and all three have interesting things to say, Hitch especially.
