Dear Team,

I received this email from Amazon -

Hello,

We're writing to let you know that readers have reported a problem in your book.

Error Category: Metadata-NCX_defect; Kindle Location: 1; Comments: Unnecessary entities are present in the NCX. Example: Chapter 1 and the chapter name "An Extraordinary Night" navigates to the same location. Similarly the entire chapter and the chapter names are given in the NCX.

Error Category: Formatting-Others; Kindle Location: 7; Comments: Small white box appears in the middle of the book in sepia, black color mode at locations 7, 63, 81, 95. please remove the white boxes in your book.

This will not affect the availability of your book. After you've made the correction, please upload your revised content through the Book Content section of your KDP Bookshelf. If you have further questions, please reply directly to this email and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

I think I know what they meant by Metadata-NCX_defect. I removed the chapter numbers to fix this.

However, I am stumped with the second error category. I went over my word document and can't see the small white box in the middle of the book. How can I fix what I can't see?

This is the first I've heard of these formatting issues and the book has been out for six months and selling pretty well.

Any assistance would be welcome.

Thanking you in advance.

Blessings,

Angelin

You don't say if you have a Kindle or paperback book.
Either way, you have to remove unwanted items (obviously).
An easy way, if you are working with a Word.doc for writing, is to go to the end of a word, then hit delete until the next line reaches that point. Then reformat that page - Such as start a new paragraph if that is what you want next.

Another thing that may help, if your manuscript is in a Word.doc is to click on the backwards looking P symbol at the upper part of the page. This may give you a hint as to where the problems are.

Dear Donna,

Thank you for replying, and so quickly.

I do work with Word with the backwards P symbol on. It strains my eyes, but at least I see what's going on. This is why I'm completely stumped about the white box.

I only work with Word because it's all I know. I write, edit, proof, format, rinse and repeat. I'm clueless what went wrong this time.

Blessings,

Angelin

Hi again,

It is a Kindle book.

I went through the Word document with a fine-tooth comb, then resubmitted. I alerted the KDP Support Team via email and ask that they let me know if anything else goes wrong.

I don't know what boxes (white, black or sepia) they were talking about. Sigh.

first make a backup copy of your document (book). then you might try going to view and uncheck gridlines. if that dont work let me know.

Blessings,

Angelina, when I first started I had all sorts of issues with Word, my fault not theirs. By trial and error I found that if I highlighted the offending page/s any anomalies would be instantly noticeable. Your little white box might become visible in your Word document whereby you can then delete it.
I know it sounds a daft way of dealing with a problem which probably has a far more sophisticated technical solution, but it worked for me. Try it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

A white box could be a text box. I forget how to make them show up, but a search should show instructions. Also, I wonder if you had two hyperlinks for the chapters -- the chapter number and the name -- rather than one? It might be helpful to check around the Formatting forum here to see if others have had such issues. It's why that forum exists.

Usually, in Word you go to "insert" and you will see textboxes and picture frames etc. You can also look at the "tables and borders" icon. That is in win 2000, but I also have win 2016, so I don't know which version you're using.

If all else fails you can do this which WILL fix the problem, but you must be careful so make copies of your original document.

#1. Make SURE you make one or two backup copies of your book in case you accidentally delete it.

#2. Open the book then hit cntrl + the A key. This will select the entire manuscript.

#3. Hit cntrl + the C key. This will copy the whole thing.

#4. Open windows Notepad, not Wordpad!

#5. open notepad for writing.

#6. click your mouse inside of the blank page.

#.7 Hit cntrl + the V key. This will paste your entire document in Notepad, and remove ALL formatting.

#8. Leave notepad open

#9. Open a NEW Word document.

#10. Now go to notepad, click in it and hit cntrl + the A. Key to select everything. Then Hit Cntrl + the C key to copy all of it.

#11. Click inside of your NEW Word document. and hit cntrl + The V key, OR right click on the mouse key and select 'paste' to paste the UN-formatted manuscript into word.

#12. At this point you'll have to redo your chapter headings and paragraph formatting etc. It's the hard way but it will work.

Blessings to you!

You sometimes see little boxes where there is a character inserted which the software can't interpret. I'm not sure this helps but if you have added any weird fonts or characters this might be the cause. To help locate them I suggest you look at the book using a Kindle or whatever and see if you can see them yourself. Once you know exactly where they are you will at least know where to look in the manuscript.
For the first error I suspect you have set "Chapter 1" and "Chapter Title" as separate headings. If this is the case they will be listed separately. You could run them together on the same line and that should solve the problem. For example "Chapter 1 - In the Beginning"
