For those that have had experience in publishing ebook/hard copies how do you go about securing the rights to publish in the UK? I have searched the threads but have not found what I need to know. Are there special copyrights that need to be obtained or licensing? Oddly many that I have connected to are in the UK and could be potential readers. I own my own copyrights and ISBN...what more might I need?

Thanks for the help and support!

If it's your work (you wrote it), then you have all worldwide publication rights by default, unless and until you assign any of those rights to another entity. If you have never assigned UK publishing rights to your work to another entity, then you still hold them. There is nothing you need to do.

As Sarah says, you're all set for UK rights if you wrote the book yourself.

As to how to publish, you do so through the .com site and choose world-wide rights (or at least UK rights), and then your books will be for sale in the UK.

You still have to jump through the American Tax hoops first, Amazon being an American country and all that . . .crazy isn't it?

Actually, the U.S. and the U.K. have a mutual tax treaty. If the O.P. provides his or her NIS to Amazon (on the "tax interview" screen), their U.S. withholding will be zero and all they'll need to worry about is the U.K. tax folks.

I have a related question: I have sold rights to my book for North America, and I wish to self-publish through KDP in the UK only. (I'm forbidden by contract to sell my version in the US.)

How do I tell Amazon to only make this book available through Amazon.co.uk?

Thanks in advance for your help.

On the rights & pricing page (third page where you enter metadata as you're setting up your book) you can choose where you want your book to be for sale. If you don't want it for sale in the US, don't check worldwide rights. Instead choose UK and any other countries where you might want it sold.

I know that Amazon is a massive company, but I never knew it was a country. Is that allowed, or is it going to start another civil war?

If you live in the UK or anywhere with a tax treaty with the US, all you need do is fill in the form with your own tax reference and you don't get anything stopped.

A country within a country within a country, actually. California went its own way many years ago, and any time now is likely to bifurcate, Silicon Valley in the north and El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río Porciúncula in the south.

Good luck! -- NJ

At least one person thinks Wyoming is a country.
