Publishing on behalf of a minor author

Hallo,

My 15 year old daughter wants to publish a small book of short stories for children as part of her "personl school project". I understand that a parent should publish on minors behalf, that is clear but my questions are:
* how we make it sure that she has proof of ownership of the content, in case Amazon is asking
* we live in Scandinavian country, but she writes in English, would she (we) will be allowed to publish worldwide?
* how to make sure the taxes are sorted out. As a minor she doesn't pay taxes, but if she receives some income from publishing (probably a very small addition to her monthly pocket money) she needs to declare them, right? Or I should declare it, since I'll be publishing on her behalf?

Thanks

LTJ

All Amazon usually needs is an explicit statement that the author claims the works as hers (this would be in response to an e-mail). When you actually do publish
the work, there's a phrase in the publishing process where you declare that you affirm that you have the right to publish the material.

I don't see why not.

I think Sweden and the U.S. have a tax treaty, in which case the withholding for U.S. taxes should be zero or close to it. How you include any earnings on your Swedish tax forms I have no idea. Note: If the U.S. withholding of any income is NOT zero, it is highly unlikely that it would be worth it to file the 1040NR needed to recover that withholding. Most foreign authors just forget it and let the money go. Obviously if you're making millions and the U.S. withholding is $100,000, then you can afford an accountant to fiddle with these things.

Thanks

Best of luck.

Edit: And one more thing: When you go through Amazon's web pages of the "tax interview", you need to supply your own, national tax ID number. In the UK it is their National Insurance No. I don't know what it is in Sweden, but if you know another Swedish author on Amazon that you could ask, that would be an idea.

The only concern I would have is that you have to be 100% sure that none of her work is copied from someone else's work. This is the only reason I haven't published my child's work.

If your daughter understands the concept of plagiarism, then you should be okay. Amazon scans periodically and will ask for rights confirmation. If the automatic scans find duplicate content, they will also ask for confirmation of rights.

Since you have to create the account under your name, it's YOUR earnings and you have to file tax per your country law.

I don't understand how this is a "personal school project." If she just wants a digital copy, you can create a mobi file with some software so she can have an ebook without having to publish via KDP.

As for making money on it, most authors don't sell any copies. Publishing is a business and you will have to actively market the book if you want it to sell. You can check out author earnings report dot com to see the state of publishing.

There are more effective ways to make "side money" than publishing.
