I know that amazon affiliate links can't be advertised or promoted via Facebook ads, but I am asking if I can promote my own book's direct clean on paid ads.

It is your book and you can advertise where you want if you can afford it.

As long as you have an author page, and not just a personal profile, yes. Facebook has been cracking down on using personal profiles for business purposes.

Also, they may reject some types of ads for romance or erotica books.

Facebook used to be a great place to advertise books, simply by posting about them, if you had a professional page. But Mark Z realized he could monetize this, so now those posts only go to a small group of your Likers. (You don't get Friended on a professional page; you get Liked.) Then $5 would get you a thousand pairs of eyeballs, which was probably worthwhile. Now it's $20, and it's a waste of money.

Good luck! -- NJ
