Unauthorized Use of Book

Yesterday, I googled myself just to see what comes up, and I noticed a link that looked a little strange. Here's the link:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B79HDAmIYnA7Z2ltX2lSOTNtaEk/edit

It leads to a page that offers a free download of my book from an organization called Bryan's Favourite Books. The page is a PDF doc that uses the book cover that I supplied to Amazon as well as the text blurb. The PDF, which appears to be stored in google docs, includes links that go to a webpage. On the webpage you can sign up for a subscription or a free trial, which apparently entitles you to download from a catalogue of books including my book, Murphy's Law. I have never been contacted by Bryan's Favourite Books for permission to be included in their catalogue, and have never received royalties or other payments from them for the use of my material. If they actually have a sharable copy of my book, they have no authorization whatsoever from me to distribute it.

To get the subscription or the free trial, you have to give them your credit card information. I declined to do that because it looks like a scam to me. Maybe they have a copy of my book or maybe they're just collecting credit card info.

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone else has experienced something similar. You may want to try googling yourself to see if your book is also being offered for free downloads. You can easily recognize the link because it starts with a string of numbers followed by your search term. Also, does anyone have suggestions on what to do about this, e.g. who to report it to at Amazon, Google etc. Thanks...

There are probably 100 (maybe 1000) threads like yours. It is usually someone collecting credit card numbers &/or downloading bad things to your computer. If it is a legitimate store, if they get an order, they will order it, have it shipped to the buyer and you will collect your royalty for the sale.

Safety tip--don't google yourself.

You can send them a DMCA takedown notice if it makes you feel any better.

The fact that they are asking for credit card info "for verification purposes only, your card will not be charged" (would pirates lie?) should tell you all you need to know.

It's not Amazon's problem, because they're just the bookstore. It's up to the author and publisher to enforce copyright. Fake pirate sites pop up all the time, as already noted, and are best ignored. Changes are excellent that they don't even have your book.

Goodness knows, probably more than 1000, since this pops up pretty much daily. It would take a few minutes to actually search the forum to find them. Not that anyone bothers.

Search DMCA on the web. Follow directions.

Just to close the loop on this conversation, I decided not to ignore it because it's obviously a scam and I didn't want my name associated with it. I filled out a DCMA form and sent it to Google, and they removed the offending material from their search results, and yes, it did make me feel better.

Here's a copy of the notification generated by Google:

In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at LumenDatabase.org.

If the same thing ever happens to you, I think it's important to do something about it. Ignoring it will just encourage the scammers and erode the public's confidence in shopping for books and other content online.

Cheers, Glenn.

Your book(s) will start showing up in the same way at all sorts of other sites, and will continue to do so.

You really should read some of the vast number of threads that already exist here on the subject.

Of course, you can, going forward, spend a couple of hours each day sending out DMCA notices (which will not really change anything, not essentially). Or watching soaps. Or napping. Or even - and here's a thought - writing your next book.

I wish you every success.

(And will vigorously defend your right to make whatever choice you do, though perhaps not the wisdom thereof)

To get the subscription or the free trial, you have to give them your credit card information.

That's the purpose of the operation. They don't have your book. But with luck they collect some nice credit card numbers.

Good luck! -- NJ
