No matter how many times I go in and hit a category and then hit save, it does not acknowledge and keeps telling me to fix it and so I can never get any further in my application. Is there some special way you have to tag those listed categories?

I can only think of one thing that would make it not save categories. That's if you don't really choose a category, you just click on an item in the list of broad book categories, which looks like this:
Fiction
Nonfiction
Juvenile Fiction
Juvenile Nonfiction
Comics & Graphic Novels
Education & Reference
Literary Collections
Non-Classifiable

You have to choose at least one of the categories that are listed in blue after you click on one of those.

I went back and that is what I have been doing. I click on non fiction and autobiographies, .. Is There any specific place you have to click? I have clicked on the squares on the left and then on the words themselves , but nothing shows me whether they took until I save at the bottom and then I get this message to fix it. Am I clicking in the wrong spot?

I see Biographies and Autobiographies in the list that comes up after I click Nonfiction, so I'm guessing you do, too. It doesn't matter if you click on the square or the blue words. A long list should show up just below Biographies and Autobiographies. You need to pick at least one category from that list, the one that best describes your book. then click save and look at the place where you clicked on Set Categories. Your category should now show up there.

If that long list isn't coming up, I suggest trying a different browser. Internet Explorer is known for not handling Amazon's KDP website well. I use Google and I have heard that Firefox also works well.
