I'm almost frightened to post this, as I feel that everybody who has so kindly helped me recently will say, "Oh no, it's her AGAIN!" :-)

Well it is ME again - and I have nowhere else to turn! I enrolled my Kindle book in KDP Select today, then had second thoughts. Not about KDP, but about the quality of my formatting. (AGAIN!) Can I upload an improved copy whilst being in KDP Select?

Also, what are 'spots'? I looked at my books today, and saw that they had some. Surely this can't mean how many people have 'Looked Inside'? If it does, I'm in big trouble, as my latest book has 4,000 (if I remember correctly) SPOTS - but no sales!

Thank you, all you patient and kind souls out there ...

Yes. Upload OVER what you have uploaded. Click publish again when done.

Are you seeing this on the retail page? Where?

I've had a long think about this tonight ... (I have bought my own book - onto my Kindle.) Looking at my 'Look Inside' and comparing it with the download onto my own Kindle - they are not the same. WHY NOT? On MY Kindle, I'm not totally happy with the Title Page as it runs over two pages - but it would 'do'. The Copyright Page is perfect. My first Chapter Page is perfect. My second Chapter Page is perfect. And the rest of the book is good. Whereas, on my 'Look Inside', these pages AREN'T good! (All Stressed-Up And Nowhere To Blow!)

My concern is that this would put potential buyers off. What do YOU think? Is it worth trying to fix these discrepancies and uploading again?

Many thanks for your help.

Thank you for that info. I don't know where I saw the information about 'spots' - and can't find it now!

You probably saw it at Author Central.

I would fix it. Others will probably reply but I assume it would be with the formatting.

On your author central page, it will tell you how many spots you moved today. If your rank had been 100,000 yesterday and was 120,000 today, you moved down 20,000 spots.

Look Inside presents your content as a continuous flow, paying no attention to page breaks or extra spaces you try to insert. (Unless of course it tries to insert extra spaces of its own.) Look at some other indies' LI. What really counts is how the book looks on the Kindle, as look as the LI isn't thoroughly messed up.

As Dale wrote, the LI presents your book as a continuous scroll. This is done for the benefit of the customer; anyone who has ever bought a book from Amazon knows this and is used to it. However, the LI also displays formatting errors commonly suppressed during conversion for display on a Kindle. If customers see in the LI such things as unjustified text, inconsistent indents, gaps between paragraphs, etc, I think it unlikely they would take that extra step of downloading a sample to their Kindles see if those deal-breakers carry over.

The whole nuisance with this is that if I do 'fix it', I won't know if it's been fixed until I upload and publish again! I might even make it worse! (What you see is definitely what you DON'T get!)

Mine isn't TOO bad, I suppose. On the Title Page my name is off to one side (not centred with the title), then comes my Preface, which is just fine. But then the first Chapter Heading is a bit iffy. I think if a 'Look Insider' got beyond that, it would be OK.

Ah, I see. So ideally, one would want their spots to decrease ...? Gottcha! Thanks for that.

Well, Donna, after a few days and lots of thought, I HAVE re-uploaded my book. So pleased with the 'Look Inside' now! It's just perfect. You were absolutely right to advise me to 'fix it'. I feel very proud of it now, whereas before I was a bit 'cringy' about it. I can now start advertising it on social media without that feeling that it wasn't quite up to scratch.

Thank you!

Lyn.

If those are your only problems, they don't seem major.
