My book sales have dropped suddenly!

Hi. A year ago at this time, I was getting close to $1,000 per month between my 2 books, (hard copy and digital.) One of those books, The Storyteller of Inis Mor - has a 4.8 Star average rating with 31 great reviews. (Only 5 of those reviews from friends) And now, within just a few months, I'm selling less than $100 a month! I tried advertising. Every time I put an ad on my sales dropped immediately. It's like some sick joke. What is Amazon doing? Both books have had great reviews from the major magazines and newspapers in Australia. What do you have to do to sell good books on Amazom? Do you need to know Jeff Bezos personally. It's INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING TALKING TO STEEL MACHINES!! Brian O'Raleigh

This summer has been rough on many authors.
Some are doing good, many are not.

Part of the problem is that books have a shelf life. In traditional publishing, a bookstore would send back books that had been on the shelf 6 weeks and get in new ones. The 6 week old ones were never seen again. At least with e-publishing your book isn't pulped.

I'd recommend writing more books if your first ones sold well. Readers who liked you before will respond, and some will see the new book and buy the old ones.

Have you tried a paid promotion? BookBub is the gold standard, but you can get a bump out of EreaderNewsToday (ENT) for a lot less layout. There are plenty of other sites; many recommend trying to have all of them promoting at the same time for a real boost. BB took me from the $100 a month club to a brief glorious reign of $3000 a month, by promoting my first book (but that was then, this is now).

Even with efficient marketing, you may find yourself in a downward spiral. Not only are adverts and promotions not as effective as they used to be, but every readership has a limited depth. If you have only two books, once readers have read both of them, then you fall to the wayside. You are off their radar. Your old books are competing with a never-ending tsunami of new releases, thousands every month, probably hundreds in the genre in which you are jumping up and down trying to get any new readers to notice you. Writers are like sharks...once you stop moving forward, you die. Even Bezos can't resurrect a dead writing career.

What do you have to do to sell good books on Amazom?

Keep writing them! You evidently have only the one book, so you're doing very well indeed to earn $100 a month in the second year.

Everyone here thinks his book is good; otherwise he wouldn't have bothered writing it. But as Dale says, almost every book has a shelf life. Of every 100,000 books published, probably not 10 will will be selling regularly ten years later.

So your task is to write another book as good as the first. (But even then, it probably won't sell as well as that one did.)

If it's any comfort, I have a book that regularly sold 60 copies a month six or seven years ago. In August so far, it has sold 2. I also have a book or two that hasn't sold ANY copies this month. But since I have 26 books on the KDP, I'm still making a good living from it.

Good luck! -- NJ
