Hi.. I am new to the writing experience and reaching out to my fellow new writers. I think as new writers we should stick together and learn from one another. Any feed back, positive or negative. what you learned, what you still need to learn. Are still waiting for that first sale?

Yep - I'm new. I've had my first book up, both e-book and Hard Cover. Ran campaign, 550 impressions, no clicks.
I did a free offering getting away eleven of the e-books. Just now I have started a new campaign changing from 25c/click to 10c/click.
It's all experimental for me - happy to watch and learn

Try 0.02 (2 pennies). It works.

I'm new. First book 'Fantasy Begins' out on 29/8. It is selling but someone just gave me a 1 rating after reading my prologue. He openly admit he never read my book but gave a 1 anyway. :(
Oh well, nothing I can do about it so I try not to let it get me down. Chalking it up as a learning experience. :)

New writers: You really need to find yourselves a decent writer's group. Consorting with yourselves alone is the blind leading the blind. Have a few words with someone who's been out there a while, and who can crit some of your prose with a professional's detachment.

Just sayin'.

I'm also a firm believer that a new writer should not publish their first novel. Second novel, maybe. :)

I think I have three "first novels" gathering electronic dust. I keep meaning to go back and rework them, but I'm too busy with other projects...

One must admire your intentions, but the forum does not function well as a support group -- too much whining already by people who can't understand a world that doesn't want to hold their hands or breathe maternal words of encouragement into their shell-like ears. It also doesn't function well as either a classroom or a manuscript critique centre -- KDP have Help Pages that really do tell you all you need to know (not that anyone bothers to read them) and you don't want to post your unpublished story in a public forum. Neither is the forum a Mutual Admiration Society -- you will not always hear what you want to hear, and if you publish dreck and ask for opinions, prepare for a journey through an often-brutal (but always helpful) gauntlet.

Here's what you need to do if you want friends, support, pre-publication critiques, shoulders to cry on, etc -- join a writers group. There are hundreds of closed groups online where you can safely post your stories and probably a few in your own town or village. But I advise you avoid safe havens. There are groups where civility is savagely enforced, where you get shown the door if you have a bad word about anyone's writing -- nice places for tea and sympathy, but you won't learn a thing about good writing.

Good writing skills are acquired by education and practice. Even a cursory glance at the majority of posts here is proof of widespread ignorance about basic writing skills and English comprehension. The number of people who depend slavishly on Grammarly and other software gives you an idea how many people slept through English classes, yet who are now trying to pass themselves off as masters of a language they do not truly understand.

If you get into a good writers group (they do exist) you'll learn more about writing than you ever will here, and perhaps you'll save yourself the embarrassment of publishing truly awful books on an internet that will likely survive the entropic death of the universe. A good group can hone your skills, just as a whetstone can sharpen a knife's blade. It can help you refine your work, just as silver is further purified every time it passes through the heat of a crucible. That sort of adversity is necessary if you fervently desire to create writing that has any lasting worth.

In contrast, all you're going to learn from the forum is what it's been designed to do -- how to publish on KDP, regardless of quality. Good luck.

I started this to see how many new writers were out there and if they are experiencing the same things as a collected group. Not for whining, which some were expected. Unfortunately, most forums I looked at seem to consist of a small portion of people. Bob answering Bill, Lisa answering to Maria etc as if shouting out in a crowded room without no one hearing or noticing the scream. I wanted to point out that there are new writers out there and just maybe among the one or hundred who have some success will speak out and give us some incentive to continue going forward.

One more thing if I may, I keep reading how bad these new writers are and I include myself as I am not accomplished writer yet but I have received some positive feedback from you for which I am grateful for and it will be used wisely.
I would like to add as for myself I try to write from the heart and with passion. I have read some bad books in the past that seemed to get more praise than it should but from those bad books, there was always a sentence, paragraph or chapter that made me think and in some ways influence me one way or the other. It's that want writing is about? so yes there may be bad books and bad English in these books but it's the passion and heart in the books that should be looked at.
I just wanted to state my reasons and some of my beliefs and this post will be terminated.

thank you.

Dominick,

I am a new self published writer. I was just published in July, and I have six books waiting to release each month until February. I find self marketing on Facebook, Twitter, and even Instagram will boost sales. I noticed a little late in the game that most writers were marketing their books months in advance. I made the mistake of marketing after being published. My only advice is get a GOOD EDITOR!! Good luck to you! -Tenza Conner

If you want to post here, post here, Writers groups definitely help but it doesn't stop you and other new writers from chatting on here if you want. I sometimes wonder whether people would be happier if people stopped posting on the forum altogether.

Hi! Newbie here. I am finding the process of self publishing fascinating. I can't stop checking to see if my sales reports have changed every hour or so. Though that is mostly a big wonderful no, there are those times when it actually does change. In any case, nice to "meet" you. Good luck to you and Write On!
