First, note that self-published technical non-fiction books sell extremely poorly. Sorry.

If your book is the kind where people would expect an index, then you do indeed need one. You'll need to set it up with hyperlinks. Good luck!

You can put an active index at the end of the book if you want, but readers might never see it...after the text ends, KDP shunt them to a rating/reviewing page. If your book has any substance, you're talking about a lot of back and forth links...If you're a formatting novice, the possibility of errors is high. Since readers can search an e-book for any word or term, is an index really needed? Something to think about.

Since an ebook is infinitely searchable, there's really no point in an index. I have seen them, in Big Five books, but never had occasion to use one. (By contrast, if I don't see an index in a print edition, I don't bother with the book.)

Footnotes are different. They should be endnotes, but otherwise work the same. Word does a good job of this; I have kept Word's endnote formatting even though I get rid of all the other garbage Word inserts in the html.

It's true that Amazon likes to skip the back matter (as it does with the front matter!) but the distractions are easily bypassed.

My best-selling book every month is non-fiction. It's not highly technical, but it is an expansion of my master's thesis and replete with endnotes, source notes, and bibliography. (No index, though.) It does sell better in paperback than in digital format.

Good luck! -- NJ

I would argue there is a very good reason to put a TOC in an ebook. Most readers have a popup menu to display the TOC so if a reader wants to flip to something, they can really fast without knowing what to search on. I think it's lame not to see a hyperlinked TOC in an ebook.

I would also expect an index. And if you decide to go wide to other markets, e.g. Smashwords, some of them require it.

Here are some things to consider:

With an index if you don’t know the exact spelling you can usually find the word you are looking for without much trouble.

If a word is used several times in the same paragraph a search will take you tediously through each instance where an index only takes you once to the relevant entry.

An index is often broken down into subcategories so it’s easier to find entries relevant to what you are looking for than slogging through every mention of a word with a search.

If any of these things are likely to be an issue for your customers than an index will make your book more user friendly. As far as readers not seeing it: If they are reading the book beginning to end that is true but if they are using it as a reference and looking for specific information they are likely to click right to the index from the TOC or in “Go to”.

thanks for your valuable answers. I already created the automatic index in the word document but when I uploaded, preview of e-book was not showing hyperlinks as clickable. could you please suggest which format I should go in creating index in e-book?.

When you go to References and choose Table of Contents you should see a checkbox to Use hyperlinks instead of pages numbers. Check to see if that's turned on.

The OP is talking about an index not a Table of Contents.

Sorry that I don't know. I write fiction so I was speaking from the POV of a reader here, I've never had to create an index myself.

Oh, one of those! I guess that would make more sense then. You can still do the index, it would just need to be hyperlinks rather than page numbers since numbers have no meaning on ebook readers.
