Sales not appearing on dashboard

I have been emailing for some weeks now but still haven't had a response. I know copies of my printed book has been sold since 20th August but the sales are not appearing on my dashboard. Customer services asked me to supply order numbers for sales I did know of, which I did, but still no response and still no sales showing. I am also frustrated that the changes I made to my book, which have been showing for some weeks now under 'look inside' are still not being sent out to vendors. I would appreciate advice how to get through to kdp team as all my attempts so far seem to be ignored. I feel like I am banging my head against a brick wall! I have been asked to talk to a writing group about self publishing through Amazon...I won't be very complimentary if the current situation continues!

This sounds very frustrating. I'm assuming you are talking strictly about print books, not ebooks.

Did you publish through KDP-print or CreateSpace? If the latter (which is a much better system), your sales will never show up on the KDP dashboard. You will have to go to your CS dashboard to see them.

If you published through KDP-print, sales of print books won't appear on your dashboard until they've at least shipped and even in some cases arrived. Do the people you know about who bought the book have their copies? This would be worth pointing out to KDP.

When contacting KDP, keep responding politely to emails you get, rather than starting a new thread. And don't bother with Amazon Customer Service, as they only know about people buying things, not people selling things (which is you). To reach KDP, use the Contact link at lower right of this page.

If changes in a print book show in the Look Inside, then any new buyers of the book will get the new version. Or are you talking here about an ebook? Previous buyers of an ebook will never get the updated version unless you had serious errors that needed to be corrected. That's why careful previewing is so important.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply. Yes the customers have received their books some weeks ago and have given me their order numbers as proof of order date. the printing was done via kdp and not create space. I have tried contacting via the link you suggest a good number of times now but still have had no response. They seem to be ignoring me. The changes are with the printed book but they are still sending out the old version. Getting no replies from them is getting frustrating and I am at a loss at what to do now?

Every time you send a help email you get a follow up asking if you if the problem is solved, reply and reiterate what you need and it should get escallated.

You didn't specify, but I'm assuming you published your paperback through KDP-Print. It's a beta service, and though it has been available for about a year it remains buggy, glitchy and plagued with systemic problems. Unfortunately, that seems to extend to its accounting as well. However, if you are relying on your Dashboard (i.e., the graph) you are looking in the wrong place for your sales. Instead, you should refer to the month-to-date chart, the only place sales are reported for the current period. Be sure to set it to print from the e-book default.

the printing was done via kdp and not create space

As Ward suggests, that might well be part of your problem.

KDP Print Beta was rolled out at the end of September last year. The process was buggy, and it seems to remain so to this day. The quality of the books that actually go on sale is rather low, as you can see by doing a search on Amazon for Independently published

Its sole advantage is that the author-publisher gets to see his or her paperback sales on the same page as the Kindle sales. But really, how big an advantage is that? How many seconds does it take, really, to check one's sales on Createspace--ten seconds, thirty seconds?

In exchange, you get that buggy publishing process, no physical proof copy, no discounted author copies for gift or resale, and no distribution to Barnes & Noble or to brick-and-mortar bookstores. (Most small bookstores will, as a favor to a customer and perhaps a small surcharge, order a Createspace or IngramSpark paperback.) If you don't live in the US, the proof copy and author's copies won't be as attractive, because of high shipping costs, but still....

My advice is to stick with CreateSpace with its excellent cover wizard, helpful community forum, and direct-to-author discounted sales. (If you don't live in the US, the physical proof copy and discounted author copies will be less attractive to you.)

Good luck! -- NJ

The sales were showing on the dashboard but since August they have stopped showing up even though I know there have been sales. I've looked at month to date as you suggested but nothing appears at all.

I had assumed kdp for printing would be easier already having e books. If I have a book on kdp print assume I can't then use create space instead? And what is the difference? I'm in Uk, what would I gain? When I first looked into getting to print I did look at create space but found it confusing and fell at the first hurdle which is why I opted for kdp. I just wish I could get a response from them. Its as if they are just ignoring any messages I send.

Well, you could unpublish your book from KDP-print and publish on Createspace. The disadvantage, being in the UK, is that although you can buy at-cost author copies, you would have to pay for shipping from the US, which could get very expensive.

The advantage of CS for you would be live chat with a human.

I'm surprised that you haven't gotten answers. Usually KDP-support is good about answering within 24 hours. Have you checked your spam trap? It's also possible that if you bombarded them with emails they got fed up, though I'd hope that's not the case.

Print books don't show up until they ship and sometimes long after, but it seems that the sales should have showed up by now. Do you by any chance have 2 accounts?

I have finally had an email from kdp saying there had been a fault their end, which is why I've not had any replies from them, they are now looking into my problem. Fingers crossed!

Hi,
I have exactly the same issue.
I ordered paperbacks to my home address to distribute among friends etc. - they arrived but no sales on my account.
Also I made changes days prior to the version been ordered and nothing was changed.
I reported the problem - as of yet, no response.
As you said very frustrating...
Good luck with it.

Did you publish and order them thru CreateSpace? If so, you got a cut-price and it is not a sale.

Also I made changes days prior to the version been ordered and nothing was changed.

Did you make changes to the paper version or the digital version?

Alternatively, if you placed your order through Amazon or another retail sales channel, there is a good chance that the books you received were stock copies which they have on hand from a previous order. In this case the royalty on the stock copies would have already been paid to you and therefore not reflect at this time and the changes you recently made would not reflect in the book because they were printed and provided prior to the changes being made. In fact the lack of changes being reflected seems to indicate that this is the case.
