I'm new at ebook creation and I plan to publish my first book within the next two weeks. I'm trying to work out all the kinks in the book before it goes out and I'm having a few problems. The biggest one so far is that when I put my book as an .epub file and try reading it in Aldiko, it looks fine until I try to look at it in the Nighttime settings where the black text on a white background gets inverted. The background goes black but the text stays black as well.

Anyone know how to fix that? Is it just the phone having issues or the ebook?

Make sure the CSS for the epub/mobi file does not have a set font color for any styles of classes. As long as there is no preset color you should not have any issues.

This is the sort of glitch that arises when people throw a word-processing document at the KDP and hope for the best. You should not have any physical declarations in the styling -- font, size, color -- unless you know what you're doing. Either fix your paragraph styles or go into the html and remove the problematical styling.

And please don't have a target date for publication. Publish when the book is ready. To work against a publication date is an invitation to disaster.

Congratulations, though, on being so thorough. I never change the background color from white, so checking it would never have occurred to me.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

Good luck! -- NJ

For the night reader to work properly you need to set your font colour to 'automatic'. You've probably picked 'black' which won't change when the screen background flips.

Good luck. J

The programs I'm using are WPS Writer (basically no name MS Word) and Calibre for ebook conversion.

I've tried setting the font to automatic, making new documents as tests with the same text and new documents with different text. I get the same thing every time even though I make sure font is set to automatic. Night mode is completely black while day mode is normal.

The book itself is finished. Everything but the ebook conversion is finished. Hell, if I didn't care about the night/day thing then I'd be done but I want to fix the damn thing.

I do appreciate any and all assistance.

This is one of the downsides to using an automagic converter, to make your eBooks. You have no ability to troubleshoot, when things go wrong. In your CSS, in the book, (or possibly in the HTML, but the CSS is more likely), the font color is set to black. Period. The only way that it can be fixed is for you to go into the HTML, and change it. That's it. Wish I could tell you an easier way, that would not require this, but, that's the only way you can resolve it.

n.b.: for those of you that just can't bring yourself to use Word--be advised that these things are the types of problems that can occur. I've seen something similar happen with Pages--not the text color, but the background color being set to white, or the like.

So, open the ePUB up in Sigil, search the HTML and the CSS for "black" (or the hex for black!!), and address it that way.

Good luck to you.

Alright! Got it working!

I have been stressing out like crazy trying to just deal with my life and this hadn't been helping.

It now flips back and forth between day and night like a dream.

Thanks for all the help. It is VERY much appreciated.

Actually, from reading the posts here for nine years or more, it seems to me to be the sort of thing that mostly happens to people who use Word! (Or, more accurately, who use Word and throw it at the KDP believing it will be transformed into a Book.)
