I'm a new author. I published my book on July 30th. I did an e-book giveaway promotion in early August and my report indicated page reads. I did another free download promotion Sept 16th with 97 downloads of the free ebook that day. However, according to the report, not a single person has read a single page since Sept. 15th. Would this be considered within the parameters of normal or not normal?

Probably normal. People download freebies by the dozen, but that doesn't mean they read them. (And it certainly doesn't mean that they will buy the next book by the author.)

I prefer to stay out of Select and make my books available to the wide world. Amazon is huge in the US and perhaps in the UK, but it's not nearly as important in other countries.

A free giveaway book is like a sale. A sale does not count in page reads.
I think you are confusing a sale and the Select Program with page reads.

You have no way of knowing if anyone downloaded through Select. This is not reported at all.

If you offered the book as a free promotion then it can be downloaded free by all, not just by Select members through the select system. In this case the free "sales" reflect in the sales report but these are NOT Select downloads and page reads on these are not recorded nor will you be paid for them because you offered the title free.

So, the page read report only shows pages read by people who bought the e-book? There is no correlation between free downloads and pages read from those free downloads.

The page reads only shows the pages read by people that download the book through the Kindle Select program (KU/KOLL) and then read it. If you are enrolled in Select then people with a subscription can download the book free and you are paid per page read.

Pages read on sales or free promotions are not tracked as there is no payment tied to them and no relevant reason to track it.

Offering your book for free will only make it more attractive on a particular day, to people who would normally have to pay for your book. People who would read it on Kay-yu won't pay it any more attention on the free day than on any other day, as when they read it in Kay-yu they'll get it for free anyway.

The worst scenario, is where people who might have read it on Kay-yu pick it up as a free download instead, just because it's there. Then, while you might not have lost the sale (people who download freebies often never pay for a book) you have lost the pages read.

The moral of the story is; if it's your only book - don't give it away. Freebies are best used as an enticement for readers to enjoy your work, so that they come back and pay for the rest of the series.

Best wishes. J

So you dont get paid per page during the free book promotion? Are you absolutely sure about this or could it just be a technical delay in updating the kenp?

The moral of the story is; if it's your only book - don't give it away.

In the immortal words of Cole Porter:

Never give anything away, away, away
That you can sell.
Ev'ry night, ev'ry day,
Try to remember, ma belle,
Never give anything away, away, away
That you can sell.

How many times does someone need to say it before you're convinced? Why don't you ask KDP Support, if you doubt what experienced authors here have said?

If someone borrows the book through Kay Yu, you get credit for pages read, whether the book is free at the time or not (if the system works). Otherwise, a free download is just that; you get a royalty of zero and no pages read are counted.
