How effective are BookBub Ads? They seem to work on a bid system, much like Amazon Marketing Services ads.

No they do not work on a bid system like AMS. Enter Bookbub in the search facility on this forum. There are endless posts with information about the promotion site. Google it too and learn what it offers. Be prepared for some mighty strong competition. They're very picky in whom they choose.

They are very expensive, very effective, and very selective.

And no, they don't work on bids. There are fixed prices according to categories.

Some of the other threads estimate those costs at almost $5 a click. Others say you can target great keywords and get away with $2.50-$3.00. Haven't seen a post yet comparing results.
And yes, Bookbub does have ads now like AMS.

Oops. I stand corrected. I've only been familiar with the flat-fee Featured Deal pricing Thanks.

Everything I've seen about the new Bookbub self-serve ads indicates that they're not worth the price for an indie author.

I don't trust them simply because they're CPM (you pay for impressions) rather than CPC (pay per click).

Same here. I also refuse to spend money on FB ads or AMS. I drive my own traffic. Not any easier, but at least I know I'm not scamming myself.

They used to be way more effective, and then just like everything in indie marketing; when it became available to everyone the price shot up and people began ignoring what they were looking at because they are forced so much garbage.

i have no time for ads actually. busy with household work.
what kind of strategy would be great for me. I have planned newspaper ads. other than that what other options do I have. I do not like to collect email. and i do not have any automatice email sending software.

I use AMS but only for my non-fiction books. After some experimenting with keywords I now get around $3.40 back for every $1 I spend - so working very well for me :0)
