I noticed on Facebook that an author trying to promote her book posted that whoever purchases her book will be entered for a chance to win an Amazon gift card. That sounds like a great idea to promote my book. Has anybody tried that before? If so, how does it work?

She would have to know who the buyers are - so, that would be ordering thru her.
SHE would supply the gift card on her own at her own cost.
Amazon would not be a part of it.

Hi there,
Any such contest would require some outside mechanism make the sale as Amazon does not tell authors who has bought their book. It also might complicate issues with reviews being considered potentially compensated and so not allowed.

It's a common practice among authors in some genres to get sign-ups for their mailing list.

The down side is that, most likely, you'll end up with a list of freebie chasers and not genuine readers who are interested in your books.

Author W: There is no way for that author to know who purchased her book via amazon or any other venue. The author would be depending upon the book buyer to pop in and say: I got it. And that may not be so. If that author is making the offer via Rafflecopter, it is wholly against the law. One is not required to purchase anything to enter a giveaway. Smart promotion moves books. Usually at a discount to draw attention to the author's stable of books. I often use Amazon Giveaway for my units when priced 99c. See the bottom of your book page for the Giveaway toggle. I tick 'follow author on amazon" in my giveaway, because amazon sends out a dedicated notice to follower upon release of a new book. That generates sales and can often put a book on the Hot New Release list.

Here's an article that might shed some light on Amazon Giveaways: http://enovelauthors.com/the-numbers-game-how-are-you-playing-it/

Good luck.
