Just to provide a bit of closure to this thread, I just wanted to say that my beta reader has now gotten in touch with me. Turns out it was a family emergency of some kind that prevented communication, and I've gotten a new schedule and a discount. We'll see how it goes now, and thanks to everyone for their advice. I've learned a lot from this.

I would disagree with this, and rather emphatically.

While a few of my beta readers were also editors, they were first and foremost very, very good fiction writers whose opinions were far more important to development of the story than the editing that would follow.

Also, if you’ve found a decent editing job done for hundreds, you’re very lucky!

Thank you for your reply, petemorin. You must be very lucky too if you have beta readers who are very good fiction writers who are willing to spend their precious time reading and critiquing your work as well as doing all of their own writing and publishing and promotion.
Most newbie indies will not be this lucky.
Most newbie indies will go onto forums and meet random strangers who fancy themselves as editors and experts - strangers who will offer the world, take the newbie’s money, and deliver nothing. And this, it would appear, is exactly what has happened to the OP.
I stand by what I say. If you need help with the technicalities of writing then go to a professional reputable editor and do a deal. Otherwise, have faith in your own instincts, tell your own story, and don’t rely on some other self-appointed expert to say yay or nay.

I would say in response to this that having other sets of eyes on a story can be really helpful. That's what a good beta reader will do. They spot plot holes, crappy character development, or things that make sense to you but maybe haven't been properly conveyed, etc. I work with a great critique group who reads through most of my stuff, and in the end I still hire a beta reader to read it all through after I do several edits. A good beta reader isn't an editor, but will make comments about things that don't sit right with them, their opinions on characters, setting, and so on. I always take critique with a grain of salt, and I do trust my own instincts, but having beta readers has really helped me to improve my writing.
