I have a series of 5 novellas that I want to publish. I want to make the first one free FOR ALL TIME, to act as a funnel for the following 4. Which Kindle publishing program should I sign up for, KDP or KDP Select? It looks difficult or impossible to sell a book free on KDP Select, right? So maybe I should publish the first one under KDP, (and make it permanently free) and the subsequent ones KDP Select. Am I right? Thank you in advance for your advice!

Don't sign up for Select. Publish your book somewhere else (I use Draft2Digital; others use Smashwords; others set up individual accounts at B&N, Apple, Kobo, etc) and make that version free. Then go to your would-be-free book on Amazon and report the lower price elsewhere, with the url.

Sometimes Amazon matches the freebie price. Sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes it tells you to raise the price elsewhere or your book will be removed from the Amazon store.

(Don't trust KDP to publish a print edition. Don't trust CreateSpace to publish an ebook.)

Good luck! -- NJ

As far as I have heard permafree is the same in Select as out oddly enough--but out would be better. Just put it up, and use kboards to get people to report it for price-matching with a free copy. Folks on kboards don't seem to be reporting any problems with this strategy.

I've done some free promos lately on the other channels (5-10 days), and KDP has price-matched after a couple of days, without even asking. Goo*gle Play seems to be the one that gets them moving, especially in India.
